It's not just Russian culture.

Eastern Orthodox Christianity went its own direction after the Great Schism of 1054. While Western Christianity had to cope with political and social upheaval, Eastern Christianity grew in a reasonably stable environment in Constantinople, and thus it had time to develop the mystical side of religion. All branches of Eastern Orthodoxy are heavily mystical.

All branches of Eastern Orthodoxy are heavily mystical.

And beautifully artistic. Love the icons. Here's one I came across recently:

The icon of the Ladder of Divine Ascent is connected with the well-known spiritual classic book, The Ladder of Divine Ascent by Saint John Climacus of the 7th century. It was inspired by Jacob’s dream, in which God promised to safeguard Jacob in all places, and that he should not be afraid (Genesis 28:12-15).
