I agree, it cannot be imposed from the outside. The 'host body' will band together to attack the outside 'virus'.
The problem, as I see it, is that Reformation for Islam is impossible. Reformation bore fruition in the Christian world when the printing press made propagation of the Bible in the native tongue available to the world. Reformation was return to God's Word.
The problem with Islam is that the last thing we want is a return to the Koran. It tells its adherents to convert, enslave, or kill. Three options - none that are palatable to non-muslims. Therefore Reformation of Islam is impossible. Shining a spotlight on the Koran - and its words - in the hope that people realize that it is satanic in origin (or at a minimum, a recipe for death and destruction) might work. Or - I suppose it could lead to a Reformation of Islam where its followers decide to ramp up their zeal to enslave or murder.
I didn’t know about Ahmadiyya - thanks for the lesson. Their thoughts on ‘Jihad’ are in great contrast to what we generally understand:

I do know that there are Muslims - (my personal curiosity has so far been limited to Sufism) - who I’m sure abhor the radically politicized and fundamentalist interpretations that have led to these decades of terrorism.
There are highly developed, civilized and spiritually-minded Muslims in the world - they are not all bloodthirsty, ignorant animals. The Islamic world desperately needs those ones to step up with courage and become heroes.
