A doctor in Florida burned to death because the battery in his Tesla burst into flames and the car's futuristic door handles wouldn't allow a police officer to rescue him, according to a legal complaint.
Dr Omar Awan died in February after his Tesla hit a palm tree.
...part of the design of the Tesla Model S is to retract the door handles into the car and they then "auto-present" and pop out when the car's key fob is detected nearby.
However, the handles malfunctioned and people were not able to open the doors
Dr Awan had no broken bones or other injuries resulting from the crash.

Here is a hint. Teslas are a prime example of designing what you could, not designing what you SHOULD.
When you get caught in a blizzard, on your way home from work, and it takes 6 hours to travel 30 miles because of the traffic, with your heater and defroster blasting, and wipers and lights going, and your radio going, and there was no place to charge your car at work, you are STILL going to get home? Physics beats smug, every time.

Nothing can stand up to a Lithium fire...or a gasoline fire, for that matter. The best they can hope for is buying enough time to get away...providing the car doesn’t turn into a coffin if its I-Pad goes south.
In the 2nd 2001 novel by Arthur C. Clarke they said the survivability of the ship and the crew in the slingshot effect pull from Jupiter outward was all worked out and went perfectly in the research center computer-—but those guys were in an office building in California and assured us that we out here millions of miles away in space will be fine.
Same with Boeing 737 trips and Tesla cars with non presented door handles.

Windowless car?
It is not unusual for doors to jam shut in an accident, so emergency responders should be trained in the breakable properties of glass.

The Model S has normal interior door handles. Pull them and the mechanical locks open, same as any car. It’s obvious you’ve never been in one.

In addition, due to airbags, cars know when they’re in an impact scenario. Why not also open the doors, rather than needing a brain surgeon to figure out how to get out alive?
Does this count against Tesla's carbon footprint?
A little difficult to get caught in a blizzard in SoCal, but a friend of mine drove a Model S as a daily in Montréal and had no trouble with an hour commute.
