Unprecedented movement detected on California earthquake fault capable of 8.0 temblor

LOS ANGELES (Tribune News Service) — A major California fault capable of producing a magnitude 8 earthquake has begun moving for the first time on record, a result of this year’s Ridgecrest earthquake sequence destabilizing nearby faults, Caltech scientists say in a new study released in the journal Science on Thursday.

In the modern historical record, the 160-mile-long Garlock fault on the northern edge of the Mojave Desert has never been observed to produce either a strong earthquake or even to creep — the slow movement between earthquakes that causes a visible scar on the ground surface. But new satellite radar images now show that the fault has started to move, causing a bulging of land that can be viewed from space.

“This is surprising, because we’ve never seen the Garlock fault do anything. Here, all of a sudden, it changed its behavior,” said the lead author of the study, Zachary Ross, assistant professor of geophysics at Caltech. “We don’t know what it means.”

In the mean time Ridgecrest has been rocking and rolling 24-7 ever since those big quakes.

CA should pray that if The Big One does hit, it hits while Trump is prez.

I can’t think of a better guy to ramrod the recovery from a disaster of that magnitude.

Note to CA: Support impeachment at your peril.

“I escaped in 2015.”

I got the hell out in 1979. My HS class just had its 50th reunion, and when I was contacted by the reunion committee I told them I would not be attending; and when they asked why, I simply told them that I hated California more than I liked them. I guess I’m now forever off their list.

Let’s hope and pray CA doesn’t find out otherwise the hard way :-)

“No bumps, or jolts, but carefully move Michael Moore out of the state.”

Heh, no other state wants him.

The rest of us are out here producing value and living good lives. (Except in liberal cities, of course.)

Flying Burrito Brothers -1969

This old town’s filled with sin, it’ll swallow you in
If you’ve got some money to burn
Take it home right away, you’ve got three years to pay
But Satan is waiting his turn

This old earthquake’s gonna leave me in the poorhouse
It seems like this whole town’s insane
On the thirty-first floor a gold-plated door
Won’t keep out the Lord’s burning rain

The scientists say it’ll all wash away
But we don’t believe anymore
‘Cause we’ve got our recruits and our green mohair suits
So please, show your I.D. at the door

There’s nothing out there near the Garlock fault. If it lets lose nothing will be damaged except some old trailers and some cracks in the lonely highways. BFD.

NASA has been running a specialized aircraft that can do deep scanning and 3D visualization of subsurface structures. Extra attention has been paid to the Ridgecrest area and parts of Idaho. The concern is magma movement. Magma is moving down the Garlock fault toward Los Angeles and the Pacific ocean. Once it reaches water, expect some serious activity.

It appears the Ridgecrest quake severely damaged the China Lake underground facilities and made the station unable to continue it's work. That was in part why Trump floated buying Greenland as an alternate site. He was ridiculed by those unaware of the motivation.

It’s the Newport/Beverly Hills fault. If that sucker goes, downtown will suffer.
