California’s expensive solar panels to fight climate change don’t work during blackout

Californians who screech about climate change were furious after discovering that the expensive solar panels they installed on their rooftops don’t work during a blackout unless they buy an equally expensive battery system.

This week, a mass power outage occurred when utility company PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric Co.) shut down the electric grid in Northern California to prevent wildfires, which have been ravaging the state.

The grid shutdown in 34 counties caused more than 738,000 area customers to lose power, KCRA reported.

The irony is that California’s insistence on solar panel installation has not helped at all during the forced grid shutdown.

Moreover, beginning in January 2020, California has made it mandatory for all new homes to be built with solar panels.

“Energy experts estimate that building solar panels can add another $10,000 to $15,000 to the cost of rebuilding,” according to Action News Now.

In other words, installing solar panels to combat climate change is not only more expensive, but has proven to be ineffective in helping maintain power during a blackout. So what’s the point?

Batteries , we need stinking Batteries ,LOL

Great point. Grid-tied systems, which this article is referring to, have to by law have an inverter that prevents islanding when the grid is down. If the grid is down, the solar system is not going to pass power beyond the inverter and onto the grid, where electrical workers could get electrocuted.

Guaranteed that people signed paperwork that made them aware of this safety feature. With that said, they can keep the existing panels, and add batteries and some other components to have the batteries charged.

EXCELLENT!!!

Rates are low enough here, that I haven't bothered to stay, um, current with what's available...

I always have to laugh at stupid people. We have three sources of power off the grid and 6 big Tesla car batteries for storage.

That power not only has to be stored it has to be change, inverted, from 12V DC into AC power.

And those city folks are always trying to tell us how smart they are.

In California PG&E would guess, very poorly, on what your annual usage would be and once a year hit you with a huge bill to make up the difference. Basturds.

That’s in line with my understanding of how it works, and it’s a terrible deal for the power company and for all their consumers, including you.

They are being forced to subsidize solar panel users AFTER the POWER COMPANY has paid for the infrastructure.

Then they are forced to provide solar users with power during off solar time.

There are a thousand things morally wrong with this whole arrangement, which is why I will never be talked into having anything to do with it beyond being forced to send money to those with solar panels.

Hard earned money I could better use myself.

How idiotic is it to put solar panels on your home and NOT have a way to store the power. Why on Gods green earth would you ever do that!?

There is nothing you can do with this bunch that controls Kalifornia.

The good folks are just leaving or ignoring their stupidity and living as they always have.

Install Nutria wheels-like big hamster wheels. I hear they have a surplus of Nutrias. After the rats get to old to run around the wheel to generate electricity they can be used to make a noodle dish.

Do I have to educate them on everything?

The cost of the batteries. Laws militating against independence.

and what materials (read that heavy metals) make up the core of batteries and how are they sought? Lots of open pit mining there, greeners! Lots of water pollution etc.

we have a great water source, a huge spring, and enough fall from the top of the mountain to run a hydroelectric plant. Before that we made do with solar wind back up generators and the battery pack.

Does California also mandate that the homeowner keep the solar panels in good repair? Do they mandate the homeowner and his neighbors not plant trees that might shade the panels?

How unbelievable is it that these solar owners expected the panels to power anything after sundown ? Much less in the daytime if there are no batteries with inverters? Very simple and not expensive backup power for a few lights and small equipment is not that hard to do. I have a small 2 panel system that charges 6 marine batteries and inverters to use 120v items.

Because my wife uses oxygen full time, the system can run oxygen equipment during the day and supply enough nightime runtime in the dark to then keep a smaller portable oxygen generator 4 hr battery charged.

So sad to see the man dying in 12 minutes when he had no power for a cpap machine that draws very little power. Battery backup is just not that expensive to keep you alive when your life depends on it.

Even a cheap 500 to 1000 watt inverter connected to the car battery and an extension cord can work till the car runs out of gas to charge the battery.
