A contingent of U.S. Special Forces has been caught up in Turkish shelling against U.S.-backed Kurdish positions in northern Syria, days after President Donald Trump told his Turkish counterpart he would withdraw U.S. troops from certain positions in the area.
Newsweek has learned through both an Iraqi Kurdish intelligence official and senior Pentagon official that Special Forces operating on Mashtenour hill in the majority-Kurdish city of Kobani fell under artillery fire from Turkish forces conducting their so-called "Operation Peace Spring" against Kurdish fighters backed by the U.S. but considered terrorist organizations by Turkey.
The senior Pentagon official said that Turkish forces should be aware of U.S. positions "down to the grid." The official could not specify the exact number of personnel present, but indicated they were "small numbers below company level," so somewhere between 15 and 100 troops.
Newsweek has reached out to the Pentagon for comment on the situation.

The deep state handed out the grid maps with firing coordinates to its embedded assets in Turkish forces.
How is this possible? Didn’t we abandon the Kurds? Maybe we aren’t getting a clear picture of what’s happening.
But we only had 25 to 50 there in total.
Deep State probably got to the Turks, paid them off to shell US SPECFOR. I would not be surprised. The Deep State has NO LOVE for our military at all.
There was an interview this morning with Sec. Defense, and General can’t remember his name who stated the fact that Turkey, and others not named were aware of exactly where our troops were in Syria. He stated they knew precisely where they were, and were continually updated to our troops movements so there would not be any such an incident as this.
That in my mind means this was no accident.
I’m not sure either but the conspiracy crowd will be along shortly.

According to Shep Smith, Lindsey Graham, all democrats and half the GOP and the media and the Pentagon we’re supposed to ignore our treaty with our NATO partner (Turkey) and start shooting the bastards (Turks). Hey, maybe they’re right. I don’t think Trump is madly in love with NATO either.

Judging from the recent behavior of Erdogan and the Turkish army, not a mistake. It was intentional, and was meant as a direct insult to President Trump.
Be careful what can of worms you open up, Erdogan. Iran is already on notice.
