A contingent of U.S. Special Forces has been caught up in Turkish shelling against U.S.-backed Kurdish positions in northern Syria, days after President Donald Trump told his Turkish counterpart he would withdraw U.S. troops from certain positions in the area.
Newsweek has learned through both an Iraqi Kurdish intelligence official and senior Pentagon official that Special Forces operating on Mashtenour hill in the majority-Kurdish city of Kobani fell under artillery fire from Turkish forces conducting their so-called "Operation Peace Spring" against Kurdish fighters backed by the U.S. but considered terrorist organizations by Turkey.
The senior Pentagon official said that Turkish forces should be aware of U.S. positions "down to the grid." The official could not specify the exact number of personnel present, but indicated they were "small numbers below company level," so somewhere between 15 and 100 troops.
Newsweek has reached out to the Pentagon for comment on the situation.
Turkey is on their own here. NATO will not stand up where the U.S. stands down. Russia can now support Assad without worrying about the U.S. getting in the way. The Kurds are already cutting deals with Assad and the Russians.
This is a terrible political position for Turkey to even think about going into Syria on their own.
At least I didn’t say Constantinople.
If the Nazi pigs at Newsweak predicted sunny skies tomorrow, I’d be sure to throw an umbrella in the car before leaving to work.
Most of today’s so-called “journalists” would be hard pressed to explain the difference between a hollow point bullet and a thermonuclear warhead.
Mistake my ass !
And just WTH is moslem Turkey doing in NATO anyway ?
Yeah just say sorry but a few of our B61s just happened to go off in a Ankora Tehran and Mecca.
Hadn't thought about that..
War technology may have advanced quite a bit over the past fifty years but it’s not as good as the video games would have you believe. We are still not that pinpoint accurate and I’m sure the Turks are less so. It could have been an accident or it could have been on purpose. It doesn’t matter. We have assets in Kobani that aren’t leaving anytime soon and the Turks should not be operating in that area.
President Trump, if these reports are true it’s decision time. We either cut and run or we hit back. It’s up to you sir. I have not disagreed much with your policies but your Syrian policy over the past year I have disagreed with on numerous occasions in this forum. You have allowed this to happen IMO. It’s decision time sir. Make one...
I read they bombed nearby but did not hit any of our forces.
>>The Kurds are already cutting deals with Assad and the Russians<<
Trump’s best option might be to tell Assad and the Russians that they may respond as they please to the Turks, and the US won’t care.
And then tell the Turks what we did.
Long term, Assad may decide that ethnic cleansing of the Sunni Arabs may make Syria more stable.
Declare war on Turkey and kick it out of NATO already. They just attacked a NATO member. Then pull out after bombing the sh!t out of Turkey and apologizing, but keep them out of NATO.
Right - a mistake. Next they’ll just happen to bomb the jets we sent over.
