The United Nations (UN) is running a deficit of $230 million, Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Monday, and may run out of money by the end of October.
In a letter intended for the 37,000 employees at the UN secretariat and obtained by AFP, Guterres said unspecified “additional stop-gap measures” would have to be taken to ensure salaries and entitlements are paid.
“Member States have paid only 70 per cent of the total amount needed for our regular budget operations in 2019. This translates into a cash shortage of $230 million at the end of September. We run the risk of depleting our backup liquidity reserves by the end of the month,” he wrote.
To cut costs, Guterres mentioned postponing conferences and meetings and reducing services, while also restricting official travel to only essential activities and taking measures to save energy.
Guterres had asked member states earlier this year to up contributions to the world body to head off cash flow problems, but they refused, a UN official said on condition of anonymity.

There is no rent. The land was donated to the UN by the Rockefellers. Funding for the buildings came from an interest free loan via the US Congress. The land is considered extraterritorial to the United States. There are UN offices in Geneva, The Hague, Vienna and Nairobi. Critics of the relocation say that the idea would be expensive and would also involve the withdrawal of the United States from the organization, and with it much of the agency’s funding. They also state that the proposals have never gone from being mere declarations.

The UN long ago lost sight of its initial goal of being a place where the world could come together to talk over problems of mutual concern. Instead, it morphed into the beginnings of a world government that is decidedly anti-American and anti-democratic. All the while, those in charge lived the high life in NYC, got rich, and created abominations like the so-called Human Rights Council. The best thing that could happen now is for the UN to just go away.
