With the House now headed down a path that virtually guarantees President Donald Trump will be impeached, conventional wisdom has settled on the idea that the Republican-led Senate will never, ever remove him from office.
Which, I get! If you were a betting person -- which I am not! -- the strong likelihood is that the Senate acquits Trump. Because, well, math. There are 53 Republicans in the chamber currently and 47 Democrats and independents who caucus with Democrats. In order to remove Trump from office, 67 senators would have to vote to do so -- meaning you would need every Democrat and a 20-person Republican revolt.
Which is not likely!

Once the House finishes the job -- if it ever does -- of voting out the articles of impeachment (think of the parallel criminal process of a Grand Jury voting out an indictment), then the case for impeachment becomes plain for all to see. How it goes forward from there isn't clear to me yet, but at that point we are far from a Senate vote to remove the President from office.
Once we have a bill of particulars, the defense team gets to prepare rebuttals to each and every point. Some here have suggested that as part of that prep work there would be a discovery phase on the part of the defense: the House will already have done its discovery.
When we see the charges, and some (but not all) of the supporting material, we the people may be able to speculate how the Senate might vote, if and when they finish with a trial. One question is how Chief Justice Roberts will rule on evidence motions. It's possible that evidence ruled out of order could weaken or even demolish the House case.
Remember that in our criminal judicial system, the juries arrive at their verdicts based only on the evidence presented. Whether that will hold in a Senate trial remains to be seen. Would the public have input to their Senators, and if so what are the rules for said input?
There are lots of unknowns still.

But threatening the structure of the country is not the criteria. It’s high crimes and misdemeanors. I consider the felony of perjury impeachable as a high crime. A felony is a high crime.

Yes, I hear that too. However, Nixon was way smarter than Clinton and had a far better defense ready. He didn’t commit a felony. He could have been gotten for ‘obstruction of justice’ but was less guilty than Clinton of that. I think his resignation was for the good of the country. Ford should have defeated Carter.

Nixon never would have resigned today. He was so screwed. Today he’d have a segment of the media that would tell the Dems to screw off.
If Pres. Trump is convicted in the Senate, he may never hold any federal office again.
I don’t assume the Senate would not remove President Trump.
I actually think it’s rather likely that they will, or that they will come very close.
I guarantee at least 10 million patriots will storm the Senate and no sane officer or military member will stand in their way.

It might be in our favor if he gets impeached. The Senate won’t convict and the Democratic Senators are forced to cast an unpopular vote.
But he could start his own party and recruit candidates that agree with his platform. 94% of republicans are sticking with him, and he is the kind of leader people would follow into a new party. Look at the UKIP party in the UK. Mere weeks after it was formed it was the leading party in the UK.
