California shocked to find bill decriminalizing retail theft resulted in… more retail theft

A few years ago, California passed one in a series of bills aimed at emptying the jails and prisons. Proposition 47carried the disingenuous name of “the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act and its stated purpose was to keep non-violent offenders out of jail. To achieve this goal, the state decriminalized a number of lesser offenses, including retail theft. The law raised the value of the amount of merchandise someone could steal while still only being charged with a misdemeanor to nearly one thousand dollars.

To the great surprise of the government, people noticed this change and began taking advantage of it. They have now recorded multiple years of steadily increasing, organized robbery. These plots are known as “mass grab and dash” thefts and they generally involve large numbers of young people all entering a store at the same time, grabbing armfuls of merchandise and dashing back out to their vehicles and hitting the highway. Not only are robberies on the rise, but arrests and prosecutions are down. Who could possibly have predicted this?

I live in California north (Oregon), but being SOUTHERN Oregon it is, thank God, far removed in more just miles from Portlandia!
At the local Walmart, I saw a guy pushing a shopping cart full of stuff into the Customer service area, and then go behind the counter to log onto a computer. I asked a clerk if that stuff in the cart has been stolen, and she said yes. I told her I was really proud of the guy for what he did, and she gave me a big smile.
So sick of the “entitlement”, I.e. “gibmedat” mentality that pervades this age!!

A friend of ours saw this happen in Haiti decades ago, when someone snatched something from an open air shop and ran. He did not get more than a few yards when the Ton-Ton Macutes had him and beat the coon dog poop out of him.

Our friend was shocked, until the shop keeper told them it had to be this way. If not, no one could have a shop without being constantly robbed of everything.

So California is degenerating into a modern Haiti without the Ton-tons to stop theft.

“clear you aren’t bringing California politics with you, you’ll be welcome. “

Utah has had that problem for years. Sokeone in California retires, sells their home, moves to Utah because it is a better place to live, then they try to turn Utah into another California.

Perhaps it is time to go back to the old fashioned stores of the 1800s that were set up like a bank.

You go in, up to a cashier and give him your list. He then sends a boy in back to fill your order and bring it to the cashier who then takes your money and gives you the merchandise.

a steering wheel and an automatic transmission.

They would demand all the gears be “equal”.

If all retail brick and mortar stores close that will help minorities stay out of jail!

Well, we could always invoke sharia law since they love satanallah so much.

Hard to drive to a smash n grab with no hands, let alone grab much.

With 47 states being better that would leave 10 that are just as bad. That is according to the former resident of the white hut.

I already do kind of that. I order online and have them bring it to my door. If I step foot in a grocery store now it’s for something simple that I ran out of like milk. I’ve been having my groceries and merchandise delivered for years.

Finally a reason to go vacation in California! You can pay for your trip by just loading up a trailer full of goodies before you head home.

There were a number of attempts at this business model. The most notable was Service Merchandise:

Just getting back from Cali crazy land .

Thanks to this new law, a lot of California stores including WalMart are re arranging their stores so everything worth stealing is in compounds with locked cabinets and you pay for them when the sales person takes them out of the cabinet so you can’t steal it. They do not give you your item until after you have payed for it.

What a PIA

One store I was in was having a floor meeting of 40-50 employees addressing the theft issues and how to combat

In another store, the employee checking bags for theft ( at a grocery store) said where he was standing was where customers usually started their “sprint out the door” with stolen merchandise . He talked like it was a very common event .

I think this is a good thing because California has passed a law that is so insane that it simply can’t be implemented

The losses and the extreme measures that business must put in place to stop theft are so unacceptable that something has to give

UPS trucks? LOL. You must live in a real nice place. They’ve been robbed in the N.O. area, and it’s easier to stalk them and pick up whatever is delivered to a door. That is rampant everywhere now and common here. I hate thieves. They need to be shot on sight.

IF being beyond STUPID was an Olympic sport, the California politicians would be chronic Gold, Silver, & Bronze medal winners.

Each day I am happier to be gone from there.

They would demand all the gears be “equal”.
= = =

And all would be “High” gear.

Having a “Low” gear would be a micro-aggression.
