Keep the area immediately surrounding the White House, the Capitol, and the mall as DC and give the rest back to Virginia or Maryland. The only resident still living in DC will be the President.
Problem solved.
I realize that the Constitution is considered by the elites to be an inconvenient obstacle to really good ideas, but it seems to me that it stands pretty firmly in the way of Congress granting the District statehood.
First, the Constitution itself establishes the District, so abandoning it should require an amendment to repeal the relevant language. Plans to cede the District, except for gov’t buildings back to MD who by all accounts doesn’t want it (the VA part was ceded back much earlier) runs afoul of the 23rd Amendment which gives the District 3 Presidential Electoral Votes.
How backers of District statehood can imagine that these problems are either not there or can be ignored, I can’t imagine. Democrats, if they sincerely want statehood for the District need to introduce an Amendment to the Constitution that allows it and go through the rather difficult process of having it ratified by 38 states. Until then, they should just shut up.
I totally agree...Of course the Dems know full well an amendment is not going to happen.
Corruption is not the issue. We made DC a non-state for very important reasons of Federalism and it needs to stay that way. Corruption can be and should be cleaned up but it seems we have to start by cleaning up the agencies that investigate and prosecute political corruption.
If you want to make all or some of DC a state, then dissolve it and give the land back to Maryland and Virginia.
Corrupt?
Then it definitely qualifies as per demoncRat standards.
Sorry, shouldn’t post with a headache.
Never happen... it’s illegal... The district of Columbia was created so the capital of the USA would not be located in any state...

Actually, the 23rd Amendment does NOT give 3 Electors to the District - it gives them to Congress, because the Electors are to be appointed “in such manner as Congress shall direct”.
It's where they all belong anyways.

Yes, “In times of war, the law falls silent”.
