California landlords would no longer be allowed to reject prospective tenants solely because they hold federal Section 8 housing vouchers under a bill passed by the state Legislature on Wednesday.
300,000 Californians who receive the vouchers. The program provides the largest direct federal subsidy for low-income tenants.
Why do we continue to criminalize and penalize and have bias against people who are poor?
That's very interesting. I'd like to read about that. Got a link?
One of the most important things one can do for survival is to simply READ THE TEA LEAVES. The same goes for teaching our kids the same.
In the case of Germany in the late 1920s and early 1930s the writing was on the wall...and I suspect that many Jews there had money to leave, or at least had ways to access the money (relatives overseas, etc.). But they figured they’d ride it out...only to discover later that they were locked-in, and no longer could escape.
In this case, it’s NO SECRET that California is now run by far-left extremists, and anyone who understands these extremists will know that they NEVER STOP and NEVER REVERSE themselves - it only gets worse with them. The people who own property there, particularly rental property there, might as well wear a yellow patch on their arm, as the Jews had to do in Germany back then...because this cannot end well for them either.
For California land owners who are conservative and understand who Democrats are, there is still time to GET OUT, but probably not much. After that, they will find themselves managing properties which produce little income, get torn up by Section 8 residents, and thus become impossible to sell.
But there are still many IDIOTS in the country, and particularly in California who will still pay top dollar for those properties, at least NOW - but not for long, as even the idiots will figure out what’s going on. So GET OUT, while you can!
So what happens to her when she is 50 an both kids are gone. Does she still get government money?
From what I have seen, once on Section 8 the only way off is death.
The multifamily industry is there already. Credit and criminal background checks required, along with proof of income (3x rent required). If you don’t pass, you don’t get to move in. Section 8 people tend to have bad credit already, so if they trash a place and get evicted, they have nothing to lose. Making money as a slumlord is not for the faint-hearted.
That would be a dump in san freekcisco.
Not quite but getting there.
They can tell you that you can’t discriminate on the basis of income, that you can’t refuse someone getting SSI or VA benefits of Section 8.
However, so far, they can’t force you to join Section 8 as a landlord. I expect liberal lawsuits soon to FORCE landlords to join Section 8 in the name of fairness and race-based disparate impact policies. It would be based on the similar logic as having X% of units in a building as affordable housing. Those rules would mostly exempt small landlords but hit anyone with multi-family housing or a large single family portfolio.
Even with Section 8 mandatory, you’re allowed to set a rental price ... and refuse to rent to those who can’t pay that level of rent. If Section 8 pays $1000 and you rent it out for $2000, you can still refuse those without additional sources of income to cover the difference.
I had a client ask me to write about the virtues of real estate investing in various cities in California. I laughed at him. You’re kidding, right? No, he was serious. I had a long discussion on the ethics of his proposal, and he argued with me about how you had to leave politics out.
Problem is - politics does affect the landlord. Whether rent control or affordable housing mandates or zoning, it would be dishonest to write a real estate market analysis and leave out the politics that certainly hurt landlords.
“I predict that eventually credit scores themselves will be banned. For being RAAAAAACIST.”
That’s probably next at the state level in California. If property owners allow themselves to be ‘surprised’ by a move like that, then they are simply NOT reading the tea leaves. It’s obvious that things will keep getting worse, and worse, and worse for them.
Also it’s fairly easy to flunk an inspection...just make sure the bathroom fan isn’t working, also use double locks (deadbolt keyed both sides) on the front doors.
I predict that eventually credit scores themselves will be banned. For being RAAAAAACIST.
From what I have seen, bad credit scores know no race. It’s an equal opportunity score.
Statewide rent control:

San Francisco forcing rental of vacant property (also being pushed in Oakland and perhaps other California socialist communes):
Going to do it in L.A. too:
As far as I’m concerned it is unconstitutional. Under 5th and 14th amendment inverse condemnation law, the government cannot force you to share your property with others.
And by analogy, the Third Amendment prohibits the government from forcing property owners to quarter soldiers.
“I had a long discussion on the ethics of his proposal, and he argued with me about how you had to leave politics out...Problem is - politics does affect the landlord.”
Thanks for the reply - didn’t think my theory (that there is still no shortage of idiots) would be confirmed so quickly.
It makes me think of Asian immigrants. They ignore politics here (in the US) and instead put their heads down, work their tails off, make their kids study, and study hard...
...and what happens to their kids? They do EVERYTHING expected of them and wind up being REJECTED from top US colleges (to make room for less qualified people of the right ‘complexion’) ...simply because they are Asian and are less likely to complain about things.
Moral of the story: You CANNOT ignore politics, simply because politics WILL NOT ignore you.
That’s the real travesty, Asians who work hard and achieve are totally discriminated against by the system because they are over-achievers and make other minorities look bad.
Instead, we want to bring in more useless slumbums who will just become a burden on our country.
Could be.
“Credit and criminal background checks required, along with proof of income (3x rent required). If you dont pass, you dont get to move in.”
When I use to rent I had to come up with ‘first month, last month, and a very big security/cleaning deposit.’
Is that still required? Is it legal in Ca.?
we had a section 8 rental in my old neighborhood that was rented by a single mother with teenage children that she pimped out of the house (boys and girls)
Every weekend in the summer there would be fights and drinking on the lawn all night.
When they moved out the detached garage was packed full and I mean floor to ceiling, wall to wall of garbage and cloths that had by all indications been worn only once.
The house was infested with roaches so bad that you could see them coming out of the house and crossing the drive way when the exterminator came and started spraying.
A former co-worker of mine rented out a house she owned thru Section 8.
It was trashed.....................
Yes, eviction is a nightmare!
Esp in a lib state like California
I cannot imagine anyone but the naive or hardened slumlords wanting to own rental property
Renter would have to apply and would be required to fill out an online form, agency would then check with prior landlords / appartment complexes. Some type of rating system. Leave an appartment trashed and your score is lowered. Have the police frequently called out, again lowered. No complaints, keep the place clean, pay your bills, higher score.
If this succeeded, Id give it about a month before it was made illegal in CA.
