A sixth American has died after developing a severe vaping, related lung illness, Kansas officials reported Tuesday.
The American Medical Association on Monday urged Americans to stop using electronic cigarettes of any sort until scientists have a better handle on the cause of 450 lung illnesses and at least five deaths related to the use of the products.
The AMA, one of the nation's most influential physician groups, also called on doctors to inform patients about the dangers of e-cigarettes.
They want physicians to make sure their patients are are aware of the devices' potential toxins and carcinogens, and to swiftly report any suspected cases of lung illness associated with e-cigarette use to their state or local health department.
The recommendation followed advice from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday for people to consider not using e-cigarette products while it investigates the cause of the spate of severe lung illnesses associated with vaping
Its not a moral judgement on smokers, and not a universal rule. Don't act like it is.
So they’re smoking basically trashcan vape juice with THC added made by Jerome and Mike (pick your favorite generic names), getting sick after getting high and dying?
Yet we must punish the big companies that have standards for the acts of off brand knock off crap?
Save us government! SAVE US!!
Why did they start using it?
Why in May of this year?
Are you saying that only the illegal cartridges are made with vitamin e acetate and the legally manufactured ones do not contain it?
Speaking of ALTRIA, the stock looks like a bargain right now. The company is solid with excellent fundamentals and a nice dividend (Ex div date is Sep 13 if anyone is interested)
Yet more than 700,000 people with AIDS having died since the beginning of the epidemic - despite decades of attempting to tame it into being "safe. And among all men, 82% of new HIV cases aged 13 and older occur among men who have sex with men (MSM: described as gay and bisexual) - despite only representing approximately 4% of the male population ).
But instead of warnings such as are given for vaping, MSM is promote and citing stats as i have is denounced.
There is more to learn, but they are pretty sure these illnesses are almost entirely related to vaping of marijuana, not e-cigs. There may be a few cases of illness from e-cigs but I think all of the deaths and the majority of serious lung illnesses are related to marijuana vaping (some of the victims vape both products, leading to confusion). The cartridge makers are probably mixing some toxic crap into their toxic crap. And I say this as a fairly libertarian minded citizen. But if you’re going to make a product for human consumption, even an illicit or semi-licit drug, better be damn sure you’re being forthright about it. Hell these days even the heroin dealers are deliberately spiking some of their packages with extra fentanyl hoping someone will overdose, because overdoses attract all the junkies to that “good stuff” they’re selling. Sick world.
Six whole people have died out of 20-40 million who vape
Oh God the humanity!
It’s the THC vape, probably black market stuff but possibly just bad science in the making of the cartridges. The THC oil is mixed with other oils and as some have noted, with Vitamin E acetate or some kind of vegetable oil (tocopherol). Likely culprit is Vitamin E oil mixed into THC vape products either black market or legal. But it could be other additives or by products in the process.
I am really not a fan of the FDA, but someone didn’t think through the process of manufacturing THC vape cartridges. The states were just too eager to tax weed they forgot to do any kind of material safety testing on the manufacture of the THC oil blends. As I wrote on a thread the other day, I am pretty sure that the big tobacco companies have the highest QC control standards and millions of dollars worth of scientists and R&D behind their e-cig cartridges. I am not saying that e-cigs are safe, only that I believe they have the highest of standards in the process; and that they have been around many years now without this kind of problem before. Why all of a sudden? These fly by night THC operations - licensed or not - don’t compare to Altria/Phillip Morris. Who the hell knows what they are mixing in with their THC oil, what process (cold press or chemical?) they use to extract the THC etc. That said, it could also be some home brew e-cig oils too.
All the news reports on the deaths and illnesses seem to be pretty clear — bootleg THC Cartridges, often labelled as a type of legal cartridge you could buy in a state where it’s legal, are the common thread with these illnesses. The issue with the Vitamin E Acetate is that it will aerosol when heated, but rapidly reforms into liquid when cooled by a few degrees. The molecules are too large to be absorbed and so you get an oil build up in the lungs.
The folks getting sick seem to vape both nicotine and THC, but the folks that seem to be just smoking nicotine or legal THC vapes, they are not getting sick or dying. My 23 yo son and I vape nicotine and have for a while and we’re fine. I have friends in Kali that vape legal THC there, they’re fine. No public health department in the nation would permit Vitamin E or any other fluid with similar properties be allowed for legal sale. Some basic biology and chemistry education (hell, 10 minutes on Google for god’s sake) is enough to know the consequences of inhaling Vitamin E in aerosol form. Draw your own conclusions.
No specific reason for the switch was offered, but the article I read indicated that bootleg cartridge makers ‘discovered’ a ‘new’ odorless and tasteless stabilizer. The article also mentioned that Vitamin E Acetate was a thick, oily liquid and that the cartridge buyers often judged potency of the product by the thickness of the liquid in the cartridge.
My theory, FWIW, is that somebody saw what the Vitamin E capsules looked like, had a brilliant idea and then ordered a bunch of the crap from somewhere and started cranking out cartridges. Thing is, somebody with the knowledge and equipment to extract THC from a pot plant should have known enough to grasp the fact that using an oil and not a solvent to hold your goodies in liquid form without separating was a really bad idea... this sounds like either one of the stupidest things in human history or a really sadistic way to poison and kill dope vapers. But who would deliberately kill off their own clients?
Thank you for the additional info
