I just recently finished reading the book "Vast Domain of Blood" by Don Schellie, published in 1971. Many years ago I'd met Reverend Robert Shaw Sturgis Whitman, the great-grandson of Lt. Royal Emerson Whitman who was in charge of Camp Grant at the time of the massacre. Besides Lt. Whitman, the Reverend was also related to Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th Mass., and a cousin had been married to General Francis Channing Barlow (Gettysburg's Barlow's Knoll). And, his aunt had married WWII General "Nut" McAuliffe.
Yet those Buffalo soldiers are cheered today, and there is a black motor cycle club calling themselves Buffalo soldiers.
