When Trump didn't embrace it, they abandoned him, willing to let Hillary pack the Supreme Court and set national policy, including discrimination against people of faith. Bill Kristol is the personification of the Washington Elite. The elite at the top may be Republican or Democrat but they are elite first and have no real inner standards except power for the elite. They will defend each other even though the other is of the opposite party as they are the true party of the elite.
