President Trump took French President Emmanuel Macrons Iran gambit in stride as the G-7 Summit wound to a close probably because Trump saw that Macrons real game was pure politics.
The Frenchmans policies have sent his own approval ratings into the tank. Nearly retired German Chancellor Angela Merkels coalition is on life support; Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau is reeling from a corruption scandal. Italys Giuseppe Conte announced his resignation days before the summit opened; Britains Boris Johnson just took over as prime minister and holds a paper-thin majority.
Japans Shinzo Abe is the only G-7 leader whose grip on power back home might be stronger than Trumps and he announced a trade deal with Washington during the meetings.
So the idea that the gathering would set any long- or even short-term common policy for the worlds wealthiest nations was always a fiction, however much the media sought to paint it as another round of world appalled by Trump.
Macron, this years host, originally wanted the summit to center on climate change and inequality. But those are the very issues killing him with French voters, hence his shift to pretending to try to resurrect the Iran deal on the sidelines.
Whatever heads-up the French president gave the American one about his invitation to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Zarif, the stunt was never going anywhere: Macron and his allies have already consulted to death with Tehran about ways to salvage the accord, even as Washington has shown it can keep tightening the screws despite the appeasers best efforts.

Trump is a smoozer.

A very Stable Genius
He avoided their climate session too. Yeah!
Love how Trump gave the middle finger to the Climate Change segment of the G-7 meeting.
I like that Shinzo Abe guy a lot...so does Trump.
Trump does NOT really enjoy Xi’s company, he acts as though he does so the commie frump can save face.
A real pleasure to watch in action, and to see the outcomes later on - disproving all the harping pettifogging of his endless circle of critics.
Just prior to the G7 Trump tweeted that Chinese leader Xi was an enemy {My only question is, who is our bigger enemy, Jay Powel or Chairman Xi? Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 23, 2019}; the Dow Jones plunged over 600 points. Brainless tongues wagged declaring Trump an idiot who is destroying sensitive relationships.
I pointed out: Quite possibly still part of a negotiation strategy. It has become obvious recently that China has adopted a mutually assured destruction (MAD) approach to trade talks. The most likely reason is that the usual DS traitors are advising Xi to damage Trump via the economy badly enough to help the DS defeat Trump in 2020 ... Trump is throwing down the challenge flag, showing he is not intimidated, instead confident...
Yesterday he called Xi a good friend - after it was announced that the Chinese wanted to resume trade talks. Trump was asked why he declared the two opposites: enemy, friend. He admitted it was a negotiating strategy --- AND it worked! ...it worked to bring the Chinese back to the bargaining table presumably. The naysayers are left speechless.
The Chinese have plots within plots; Larry Kudlow pointed out this could well just be a delaying tactic on the part of the Chinese leading up to the 2020 election. The point is that President Trump understands the subtleties of negotiations and can quickly and easily adjust to changing circumstances. Could the 'bama Admin have handled this Chinese ploy? The GW Admin? Hindery Clintoon? Clamydia Harris or Elizabeth Wearing?
As you say: A very Stable Genius! :^D
Beautiful analysis, Mr. Ireland.
:^) thanks
That was the best part. The Gaia Worshipers are eating their own livers over it. LOL!
I agree 100%. Trump has played this type of game for decades, just this time it’s much higher stakes.
“Trump was asked why he declared the two opposites: enemy, friend. He admitted it was a negotiating strategy -— AND it worked! ...it worked to bring the Chinese back to the bargaining table presumably. The naysayers are left speechless.”
