For years, New York City has essentially maintained two parallel public school systems.
A group of selective schools and programs geared to students labeled gifted and talented is filled mostly with white and Asian children. The rest of the system is open to all students and is predominantly black and Hispanic.
Now, a high-level panel appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio is recommending that the city do away with most of these programs in an effort to desegregate the system, which has 1.1 million students and is by far the largest in the country.
Mr. de Blasio, who has staked his mayoralty on reducing inequality, has the power to adopt some or all of the proposals without input from the State Legislature or City Council. If he does, the decision would fundamentally reshape the segregated school system and reverberate in school districts across the country.
The mayor will now be thrust into the center of a sensitive debate about race and class at home, even as he is straining to stand out in a crowded field of Democratic contenders for president. Sign up for the New York Today Newsletter

The gifted programs are BS. Beethoven and Mozart were gifted. The typical kids in these programs are brighter than average, but in no way gifted.
Low IQ kids are showered with services. In fact, by law, they are at the front of the line when it comes to public education. Their needs come first, and if average kids’ needs have to be shortchanged, so be it.
Gifted programs are considered a luxury by most school districts and they can be cut with no official consequences. While not gifted by your standard, they are outstanding and will, if encouraged, contribute to the world in many ways.
I’ve had the good fortune to teach a few of these kids over my career. They are a joy to teach because they nearly always want more. If they are sitting in a class of below average students they are forced to ignore what is going on around them while the teacher is busy trying to control behavior rather than actually teach.
I always tried to aim my lessons towards the brightest rather than the average. That way every kid got exposed to somewhat advanced material. That made it hard on the slower kids but how else do they hope to catch up?
> Next is when the Asian kids dominate the New York State Regents and AP tests those will be banned too. <
The tests wont be banned. Instead scores will be adjusted up or down for the students background. Theyll call it normalizing results, or some such thing. Mark my words. It will happen.
That is the exact opposite of what should be happening.
Raise the bar high, if you want students to reach and make an effort. If there is no standard to accepted achievement, there is no achievement at all, only babysitting, brainwashing and bullying for daring to have an independent thought.
If you don’t track students you either are grievously slowing down the bright kids of grievously teaching over the head of the not-bright kids.
Yeah, I don’t get that, Asians in general, even Asian-Americans, are much more conservative than the Democrats and more conservative than other ethnic groups, even whites. And if you go to Japan, Korea or Mainland China you see that big time. It’s not a coincidence that John Yoo at Berkeley Law is a conservative, for example. It’s part of his underlying Korean heritage. Many Koreans are very conservative—remember that they have seen oppression and violence up close and personal, first with the Japanese occupation and then with the Communists. And in the LA riots they didn’t roll over to the rioters. They all armed up and defended their families and property. Don’t pick on a group of folks whose men have all been through compulsory military service.
I remember seeing a YouTube video once of an Asian girl protesting in a student government meeting at Berkeley, she was obviously first generation American but had drunk all the Koolaid about feminism, etc., and was just spewing out four-letter profanities all over the place.
I just remember thinking of how ashamed her family would be of her. And it probably dropped her a few dozen notches on the matchmakers’ desirable bride list. My guess is she got the ice treatment from all of her relatives when she went back home for vacation.
brazilian education professor paolo friere introduced the concept of critical pedagogy to the classroom with his book “pedagogy of the oppressed” (1968). basically it advocates all teachers teach all subjects from a critical theory, class based perspective.
from this, other educators introduced the concept of equity to teaching. equity means equality of outcome irrespective of economic background or other factors.
Because Democrats support chain migration, and THE big issue for many Asians is getting their relatives over.
Gifted children do need more challenging work in an environment where they are allowed to succeed. That environment could be in regular classrooms if rules of conduct were enforced.
At some point, the left will go after private schools and homeschools as well, to eliminate the last escape hatches.
It's not enough to be bright, one must appear to be enlightened.
[Gifted children do need more challenging work in an environment where they are allowed to succeed. That environment could be in regular classrooms if rules of conduct were enforced.]
No doubt his Mensa wife came up with this idea.
I say eliminate all public schools and let the churches of these communities educate the kids!
"Teaching and learning are so intertwined that it is impossible to separate the two. . . . I don't think teaching takes place until learning occurs. . . ." - Sy Fliegel (formerly East Harlem High School)
He will destroy the gifted schools and that will cause the regular schools to rot further. It will not help them to gget the smart kids back in the dodo schools. They will get bored or do their own thing outside of class and still top the A and AB lists until that must be dealt with, too, by the egalitarians.
You will probably see the airbnb equivalent of a school all over NY soon. Small private schools that meet daily and maybe once a week at the local museum.
Same with most Jews. Why vote for the party that wants Israel weakened or destroyed?
Why do blacks vote for the party bringing in illegal aliens to replace them on the job site?
Why do Democrats leave Democrat cities and states because of the high taxes and crimes, go to conservative areas, and then vote... for Democrats!
They’re stuck on stupid, that’s why.
They won’t give any school that isn’t state-sanctioned by the thought police the greenlight to exist.
