Well, two out of five I guess. Death penalty and nut hatches. This whole problem (and many others) seemed to start when America closed mental hospitals across the country.
Just my humble
“This whole problem (and many others) seemed to start when America closed mental hospitals across the country.”
They called it “mainstreaming” at the time. That was a lonnnnnnng time ago.
Never going to touch the crazies. ACLU will file a lawsuit before the ink dries from the President’s pen.
“..... This whole problem (and many others) seemed to start when America closed mental hospitals across the country.”
Republicans freed the slaves. Democrats freed their own.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1962) => The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 => deinstitutionalization if the mentally ill, a woefully inadequate community mental health system and now they are normalizing mental illness.
(Nope, everyone is NOT a "unique and precious little snowflake". Too many people are bat**** crazy.)
Your “humble” is absolutely correct.
Some people cannot help themselves. Unfortunatly someone has to help them. When a person is the shooting stage incarceration is a mercy for us all
Yes
This does not mean the other ideas are not worth pursuing.
I agree that we need more mental institutions and in some cases involuntary institution. If this cuts the problem by half, it is doing a good job.
As I recall the ACLU was big on that, and in TX, Governor Ann Richards was happy to empty State Hospitals. Alzheimer/ Dementia pts were supposed to be placed in private institutions. Drug and Alcohol treatment, unless dual diagnosis pts were SOL.
The focus became “mainstreaming”, remuneration, and good old Ann replaced competent caring directors with her friends. One charged $35,000 cuff links on his state credit card, another a luxury sports car. it was a disaster. Beds were cut, catchment areas denied beds for emergency detentions.
I still feel anger that I had clients die while I was trying everything I could to get them in for treatment.
That happened in the 80s. Really?
That and proliferation of SSRI use.
Don’t despair - he knows that so called red flag laws would, if used correctly, tag 98% dems and the other parts that you aren’t thrilled with would do the same...
Tweeted to him and others that what sounds good becomes a nightmare when we can’t trust our government to not misuse/abuse/expand such “sensible” actions.
