Public execution sounds good. My vote would be for hanging in the town square. Though I would recommend keeping the rope tight, so that when the platform dropped away their neck did not break - slow strangulation.

I was thinking more along the lines of breaking on the wheel and allowing recovered wounded victims and family of deceased ones to administer the blows. All customary acts of mercy shall be expressly forbidden to the executioners.
