If you could magically remove all firearms from Chiraq, they would then pick up ball bats, knives, cars, etc...and the killings would maintain a similar pace.
Gun Control in Chicago is part of a stealth program to reduce the population in the ‘hood.
Long guns or shotguns, yes you can, though all Illinois laws (e.g. waiting periods) must be met. Handguns still have to transfer though FFLs though. It’s part of an interstate agreement with Illinois and its neighboring states.
Long guns and shotguns are generally not the weapons of choice among gang bangers.
The FBI reports in 2017 that roughly 60% of all guns used in crimes in Illinois come from out of state. That still leaves 40% of the guns come from within the state.
But none of this explains why the crime rate is so high. Legal guns owners don't go out and commit gun crimes at the rate that Chicago experiences. IOW, just owning a guns does not mean that you are going to grab it and run out the door to commit a crime.
Why do so many people commit crimes and injure and kill people with guns in Chicago?
The answer to that question is black-on-black, gang-related criminals.
That last fact is what Mayor Lightfoot needs to deal with, not where guns used in crimes come from.
The level of gun control has little to no impact on crime. It is the number of available criminals a location has that dictates the level of crime.
Swing and a miss. It’s simple supply and demand.
Cities with strict gun laws supply more unarmed victims. This may attract more criminals to the area, but that wouldn’t happen if the citizenry were armed.
Clearest illustration: Chicago vs Philly. Similar demographics + much different gun laws = much different outcomes.

And what about the minuscule gun crimes in all the other Illinois cities/areas (excluding East St. Louis ...ahem) close to the borders with contiguous states? Must be something unique to Chicago. What could that be?

So.... 0 guns allowed in Chicago. Gun deaths in the 10s every weekend. And it’s the fault of other places, not Chicago?
Long guns are ok to buy across state lines of CONTIGUOUS states by Illinois law. However, a lot of the out of state dealers are unwilling to do it because they have to abide by Illinois law with regards to the FOID, waiting period etc. Chicago problems are with straw buyers and gun running from Mississippi by cooperative brothers in Dixie.
Chicago’s gun laws have worked as well as “MAD” Tim Sullivan’s New York anti-gun laws. Disarmed those who would fight back when robbed.

Chicago voters have the Mayor that they deserve.
Obviously the answer is to close the border with Indiana.
