A few days ago, I wrote: I hope [Kamala Harris] will be asked to state her position on the busing of young school children for racial purposes in todays America. Now, she has been. Here is her answer:
I support busing. Listen, the schools of America are as segregated, if not more segregated, today than when I was in elementary school.
Where states fail to do their duty to ensure equality of all people and in particular where states create or pass legislation that created inequality, theres no question that the federal government has a role and a responsibility to step up.
Its interesting to hear Harris say that states have a duty to ensure equality of all people and that the feds have a responsibility to step in if states dont meet this alleged duty. Was Harris talking about a general obligation to ensure equality of the races? If so, her candidacy is beyond radical.
But even if Harris was talking only about a duty to ensure racial balance in all schools, her position is extreme and unpopular. Busing children out of their neighborhood for racial reasons has never polled well. In the early 1970s, when Harris was bused, only 4 percent of whites and 9 percent of blacks supported the idea, according to a Gallop poll.
At the end of the century, by which time such busing had been abandoned in most jurisdictions, including Berkeley where Harris went to school, 82 percent of Americans opposed busing. Blacks were split 48-44, with the plurality opposed.

This will kill her in the South.
No one likes busing! Total fail! She’s just trying to score more points on Sleepy Uncle Joe Biden and sell more of her “That Girl” her T-shirts.
Just let her keep talking. She will drive away votes hugely!!
First, she wants everyone to hate while people but now she wants to bus them into select schools to improve their performance records.
Is Trump considering a federal busing policy?
A reporter asked Trump about a heated exchange between the Democratic presidential candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris at last weeks debate on the topic of school integration: Where do you stand on that issue of federally mandated busing? Trump first graded the debate on style, then added, And as far as that, I will tell you in about four weeks, because were coming out with certain policy thats going to be very interesting and very surprising, I think, to a lot of people.
Well...maybe THIS is the way we finally destroy the public school system
Looks like she’s going to keep stroking this issue until something comes of it...
Agree.
How about supporting Charter Schools? They have proven repeatedly that there can be academic excellence in the most economically depressed neighborhoods.
No need to ship kids away from their friends in some twisted social experiment.
Oh, that’s right; your teacher union friends will pull their support. The hell with a real solution for the kids; need those campaign donations!
A statement like that from DT is generally a punt. He knows nothing about the subject but at least has learned he should keep his mouth shut until he buys a clue. Two years ago, he would have blurted out at the spur of the moment that he’d be coming out with an amazing bussing plan that would would be the greatest ever. Then the handlers would have spent a painful two weeks walking it back while the boss was off heaving hand grenades in other directions — while the amen chorus insisted it was all n-dimensional chess and that DT was ten moves ahead of everyone else. He’s limping up the learning curve. Punting is serious progress.
