Some anti-Russian propagandists say he means classic liberalism but in fact he himself is a libertarian and so are most of the Russian middle class.
He also says about real things behind that term he uses so it is not really hard to figure out which liberalism he means.
I don’t remember if classic liberalism was about sanctuary cities LGBT dictatorship.

"Putin is giving us a tummy rub?"

Could be. And, some here think it feels good.

He’s right how to kill a country and never fire a shot.
They said that like in the 60’s .

As one who has more than once confessed on this forum to a pesky libertarian streak, I don't identify Putin's policies with libertarianism, but there is a certain anti-progressive flavor to him. Rather, I see Putin as a throwback to the age of the Czars, behaving as they have done for millennia, ever seeking to extend Muscovy's borders and inflicted with a dose of paranoia against the rest of the world. Add to that the moral compass of Ivan the Terrible or, if you prefer, Beria and the man is fairly well explained.

Putin is not a libertarian, he is a throwback tyrant. His opposition to "liberalism" arises because he instinctively sees liberalism as a threat to his autocratic position and as a road to national weakness.

That does not mean that he cannot be dealt with or that he will not participate in deals. It is vital that the American longtime national security objective of preventing Germany, Russia and China from uniting against the rest of the world continue to be pressed. We already see that Putin will play America off by cozying up to China and Germany. Angela Merkel is all too eager to slip between the sheets with Russia. Additionally, Russia has entirely too many tentacles into the Middle East which fit neatly with its central geographical position.

A waning economy dependent too much on minerals and petroleum, Russia nevertheless remains an important player and Trump is right to see the broad geopolitical interests of the United States and he is right, therefore, to romance Putin.

Agreeing with Putin. Take away country and put house. Why shouldn’t people in one house live the way they want, if they are self supporting? Why should they be forced to pay for newcomers who don’t contribute and who don’t even like them? No one, no one, takes in people who hate them to support them in their own home.

Well, I’m sure that the real reason why liberals in the Western nations don’t like present-day Russia is because Putin has opposed the LGBT movement every step of the way.

Putin has only opposed the bullying tactics that the LGBT movement has used so successfully in the West. It is perfectly legal to be gay in Russia. What gays in Russia aren't allowed to do is bully everyone into bending over to their every demand to destroy cherished traditions and institutions.

Well, he’s right. Most people in the West realize an uncontrolled and never ending flood of third worlders who do not share their values is not in their interest.

I very much appreciate your thoughtful analisys but it lacks insight into a nature of Russian political processes and related discussions. Putin is actually in a long time dispute with the left and he sounds pretty much libertarian while at it.
Russia for example pursues a very conservative fiscal policy and his reforms from the very start were about to reduce big government. There was legal reform which brought courts to pretty much Western standards and he also was behind a 13% flat income tax.
That oil economy is not really true as well. The share of mineral extraction in total Russian economy is just marginally above that of US. It is true that the energy business was historically taxed excessively in Russia which made it the biggest contributor to the federal budget. It is actually changing now.

I'm glad to hear a correction to my information.

A quick Google reveals that Russia's petroleum amounts to about 30% of GNP and mining another 11%. I don't know how much more is natural gas?

For the USA petroleum is about 17% and mining about 15%.

Here is an old article (looks like 2014) that suggests:

It is hard to put a number on this, but by various estimates it has ranged between 10 and 13 percent of GDP in recent years. So our overall figure is now up to 67—70 percen

What do you make of this analysis?

Would you not say that Russia's "very conservative fiscal policy" is very much dictated by the price of oil? No oil revenue no possibility to spend. Nevertheless, he has increased the military-hardly a libertarian bent.

I hope you are right about the courts, I've never heard of such a thing I am dependent on headlines which show the jailing of some oligarchs and the murder of others as well as reporters, and so forth.

Do we know whether his flat income tax of 13% is a product of libertarian philosophy or is it simply a way of keeping a lot of money in the pockets of his apparatchiks and crony oligarchs?

Finally, my impression of Putin is very much conditioned by his behavior in Georgia, Crimea, Ukraine, Syria and Iran. Again, I do not see this in libertarian terms but as historically consistent with Russian history.

Your thoughts? I think you are probably much more informed than I am so I would really like to know your thoughts.

Eastern Europe also knows what godless nations become. They lived under atheism just as they lived under Marxism. Once the shackles of communism were released, the people denounced atheism and rushed to God like a magnet.

Putin openly prays to God.

Godless nations fall.

The Democrat Party is the party of godlessness just as it is the anti-American party. Democrat politicians openly pray to satan and attempt to put hexes on President Trump.

What else would anyone expect though from the party of slavery, infanticide, the Ku Klux Klan, antifa, abortion, voter fraud, illegal immigration, Jim Crow, segregation, racism, lynching, coup d'état, HATE and EVIL?

What else? Communism, atheism, witchcraft, and the worship of satan, of course.

Arguable. Defending the country as a function of government is libertarian, AFAIK.

Any suggestions arguing official numbers are mostly speculations. All they do are saying ‘You can’ t trust anything coming out of Russia! ‘ and that is all.

The greatest indicator is a GDP comparison between Russia and traditional oil countries like Saudi Arabia, Norway and Venezuela.

All four had their GDP floating around $200 billion in late 1990s.

By 2013 Russia was in top ten by nominal GDP at above $2 thrillion. Where were the rest all with much smaller populations to spread the oil wealth around, without costly diplomacy and military Russia has? All their economies combined wouldn’t make near it.

Just that simple fact puts the end to a gas station myth.

Conservative fiscal policies are dating back the beginning of Putin’s first term and continuous despite oil market fluctuations.

As for jailed oligarchs what do you know about their cases apart from opinions from partisan media? Do you believe these oligarchs are saints? That’s quite funny.

The same about journalists. They get killed sometimes and it is not really right to link every case to the government. Especially without any facts behind accusations aside from speculations by partisan media as in the oligarchs’ case.

As for Georgia and the rest I see nothing expansionist and anti-libertarian in that.
Russian intervention in Georgia at the very least justified by indiscriminate killing of 60 Russian troops by the Georgian forces during the latter’s Ossetian offensive. The troops weren’t invaders. They were placed there by OSCE to which Georgia a part of to prevent the Georgian genocide of Osetians.

Syria is a long time ally. And it is closer to Russian border than Boston to Washington DC. Syria is one of a few secular countries in the region and it is common interest not to let militant Islam take root there.
