What If Colleges Used Only Test Scores to Fill Campuses?
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 23, 2019 | Douglas Belkin

As Americans debate the roles of wealth, race and access in higher education, researchers at Georgetown University wondered: What would the nation’s most selective colleges and universities look like if they admitted students solely on the basis of SAT scores?

Their answer: The most prestigious U.S. campuses would be wealthier, whiter and more male—leading researchers to question the role standardized testing plays in a fair, comprehensive admissions process.

More than half the students now enrolled at the top 200 colleges and universities would lose their seats to students who performed better on the test—and the median SAT score would rise by 70 points to 1320, the study found.

The biggest losers in this reshuffling were black and Latino students, whose numbers would be cut nearly in half, to 11% of all students from 19%. The share of Asian students would slip to 10% from 11%. The principal winners were wealthy white male students, whose ranks would increase. But a large number of white students would lose their seats and be replaced with other white students.

“The affluent have extraordinary advantages in college admissions,” said Anthony P. Carnevale, director of Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, which performed the analysis. Until 2005, Mr. Carnevale was a vice president at Educational Testing Service, which is a client of The College Board and administers the SAT.

Many elite colleges consider a range of factors such as grades, extracurricular activities and teacher recommendations in what they call a holistic admissions approach. They also try to build a diverse student body and might look for students from underrepresented ethnic or racial backgrounds or geographical regions.

The holistic admissions process has come under fire following the disclosure this spring of the biggest cheating ring federal prosecutors say they have ever seen.

Testing for subject matter seems more relevant than testing for intelligence in the college admissions process. Who cares if someone has an IQ of 150 if they can’t even tell you how many amendments are in the Bill of Rights?

Content matters and matters a lot.

I became so tired with people telling me that all that needs to happen is to teach children how to think. As if their little brains actually would find CONTENT on their own.

From 4 to 8 intro language and math skills, Intro Our World Skills

From 8 to 14 Facts and information.

From 15 to 18 Facts and integration of knowledge.

education and intellegence are two things that are not always related

education and moral reasoning are also not always related.

No, former homeschooler

If you think kids are getting facts and information these days, you are sadly mistaken.

they have precious little education and learning.

I love the Hirch books and used them to sketch out my curiculumns each year.

That’s something I learned long ago.

Over the decades, I’ve worked with engineers, tradesmen, craftsmen, as well as other scientists.

I have great respect for all of them.

There is one man that has worked around me for years. He’s not the brightest, but he is as honest and hard working as any. He does his part to the best of his ability. That’s all you can ask of any man and he deserves to be treated like a free man like any other.

The SAT is fundamentally an intelligence test, not a knowledge test.

The SAT is not an intelligence test. It is a scholastic aptitude test. In other words it is designed to predict performance in college. Of course it correlates positively with IQ tests but it's not an intelligence test.

Asians would lose share? That goes against everything I have read on this

I'm guessing that Asian students benefit from GPA as well as SAT scores, whereas many high-scoring SAT white kids don't always have the highest GPA.

I say this because of the Asian work ethic that rewards rote assignment fulfillment, whereas high-intelligence white males, especially, are more motivated by intrinsic learning than extrinsic demands such as grades.

No, there are definitely more Asian students who would for example be accepted to Harvard if they went by straight SATs—both higher overall scores for the Asians and more Asians at the Ivy-level high end.

How the survey works is they look at the range of scores that qualify for admission to the elite college and then take the students in the country as a whole who have scores that qualify.

A lot of Asians would get into the elite colleges if only test scores were taken into account. But Asians already apply to and go to those schools. Many White male students with above average scores don't apply to those schools and may not even go to college.

In the methodology of the survey, a lot of White students who don't apply to or attend such schools are "assigned" to them on the basis of their test scores so a lot more of them would attend such schools according to the survey.

In the real world, though, more of those Asians who apply to elite schools would get into their first choice, while White guys who don't apply to such schools probably still wouldn't apply to them.

Not very many elite white male scorers don’t go to college.

First, more than a few white male high scorers don't go to elite schools but to state schools, so they don't show up among the applicants to the top schools.

Second, there are more than a few higher than average white male scorers who don't go to college, but into the military or even to work.

I wasn't talking about members of any elite, but of kids in the middle of the country who scored well on the ACTs or SATs, but don't go to elite schools.

I took the trouble to look up your post after I found out the information and post to you. You're welcome.

The article of course is only referring to top schools, where Asians are at this point seriously discriminated against—if you consider only test scores.

And thank you.
