Climate change prep will cost $18B (ocean rises faster in N.E. - only 11.57 years left)

BOSTON — Massachusetts will have to spend more than $18 billion to fortify its coastline against rising seas and monster storms fueled by a changing climate, according to a new report.

The report, compiled by the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Climate Integrity - a nonprofit that supports states and communities that sue polluters - estimates the state would have to spend that much over the next 20 years to to fortify seawalls and other barriers to defend against erosion, flooding and other impacts of a warming planet.

Nationwide, 22 coastal states and Washington, D.C. will have to spend $400 billion collectively in that period to fend off the impacts of climate change, the report stated.

"As things stand, taxpayers are on the hook for all the costs," Richard Wiles, the group's executive director, said Wednesday during a phone briefing. The group says fossil fuel companies should be on the hook to "help communities adapt to the damage their products cost."

Are you sure it is still 11.57 years?

Seems like we are moving forward, are you adjusting for the time remaining?

Just asking. Good post. :)

I cannot fathom the increase in agri production from even a half degree centigrade increase in average temperature.

Probably 1000 times that worldwide.

Any town that charges people to get on “their” beach should pay for it. That’s what the beach fees were for. Unless the towns used that money for other things. In that case, too bad.

This is a 50 year sea level trend for Boston MA. It is lower than it was in 1945! But, the chart is in mm/year. This whole thing IS A HOAX

It’s an iron-clad economic law that you get more of what you subsidize. In this case, we will get more high-dollar-value coastal development, regardless of the facts of meteorology.

Kennedy tries to halt windmills

A fight to block alternative fuel development that could replace oil-burning power plants for communities along the Nantucket Sound has created an unusual alliance on Capitol Hill, with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy backing the fight against the green proposal.

Mr. Kennedy, a staunch environmentalist, opposes the Cape Wind project, which will place windmills in the sound’s shallows to create electricity for customers in Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

Critics say the Massachusetts Democrat doesn’t want the Cape Wind project in his own back yard along with 130 windmills that might clutter the water view of the Kennedy clan’s vacation home. Sen. John Kerry, Massachusetts’ junior senator and another key green ally, called attempts to derail the project an “insult.”

Try spending $18 billion without emitting more CO2 than before. It can't be done. Spending money is the same thing as consuming energy.
