Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) signaled on Thursday that he and his allies will actively work to oppose Roy Moore's bid for Alabama's Senate seat after the conservative firebrand announced he was jumping into the race.
"We'll be opposing Roy Moore vigorously," McConnell told reporters after returning to the Capitol after a White House briefing on Iran.
McConnell's comments come after he warned, during an interview with the Associated Press shortly before Moore announced his bid, that he would "oppose him in every way."
Moore announced on Thursday afternoon that he would launch a bid for Alabama's Senate seat after previously winning the party's nomination in 2017, only to lose to now-Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) in a contentious special election.
His candidacy is a national nightmare for Republicans. They blame him for losing what they view as a safe GOP seat in a deeply red state that President Trump won easily in 2016.
Moore lost the race after facing multiple accusations of pursuing sexual and romantic relationships with teenage girls decades ago when he was in his 30s; he has denied any wrongdoing.

Maybe because he he fought practically single handedly to get the 10 commandments back in the courthouse.
If that is true then why bother, Alabama is lost.
I had a hard time keeping up with the story. I did know that the GOP establishment hated Moore, which enhanced Moore in my eyes. But when Trump didn’t support him I figured he understood the race better than I did.
If you think the continual attacks on Moore changes a single vote you are right, just not the way you want.
Trump did support him in the general.
I think it was Trumps Olive Branch to Mitch
Trump had originally supporte the third guy and then went to Strange in the runoff
Trump campaigned vigorously for Moore in the general
The housewives of Mobile Montgomery Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills and Huntsville and the triangle in the northwest of Florence Decatur and Athens have the election to Jones who ran hard right of course and being emo dumbasses they drank it down
White males and rural whites of both sexes went strong for Moore
Alabama like Mississippi is very dark...28%
How can a democrat win against any candidate in Alabama? He needs massive help from the likes of you and the other Moore haters in the Senate and on Free Republic. If only we had hated Romney as much.
Trump and Mitch have no business butting into this race they can only lose support because the RINOs and Democrats that agree with them are not going to suddenly vote Republican, but a whole bunch of Republicans who actually support Moore may change their vote or stay home.
Be honest and tell us which one of those things have actually happened.
McConnell, along with Senator Grassley of Iowa, BOTH attempt to portray that they're "all business" and conservative-based.
Truth is.. on the surface that's what they portray, "all business"... but beneath the surface I detect "BULL$HIT!"
Sessions should run.
He may have been a horrible AG, but he was a good Senator.
Yet Mitt Romney and John McCain got a pass.
This is the key point. Apparently, the Buckley rule of voting for the Republican closest to your positions only applies to conservatives and party loyalty is a one way street. Progressive Republicans are free to support Democrats like Hillary and Doug Jones without retribution. Meanwhile, conservatives continue to vote to human debris like Mitt Romney who then undermine the very positions they are elected to support.
We’re really not that far from a beltway GOP Politburo bureau selecting our primary candidates. And assaulting those candidates like Moore who they do not want in Congress. Sad to see so many good conservatives can’t see the danger we are in.
POTUS doesn’t want any divisive intra party brawls during the 2020 campaign season that the Dems/media can exploit. He knows the GOP will once against support and openly campaign for Democrat Jones and that is real bad for GOP voter morale/turnout. That’s my guess as to why he wants to pull the plug on Moore ASAP.
Moore has to win the primary again
Not so easy this time is my guess
If McConnell had support the best conservative candidate two years ago, he wouldn’t have this problem and Mooney would have been elected last time.
Them maybe he needs to get a little tougher on the traitors in his party and actively campaign against them, or at least threaten to.
The guy is a loser and showed that by that pathetic campaign he ran. He took the weekend off to watch a football game! He has no business running again.
Never heard of Arnold Mooney. Quick read on his biography, he is a real estate guy. Attended Samford (private university which probably means family money) and George Washington University (big red Swamp Creature warning flag right here.
Roy will receive tons of campaign money from the dems.
