Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) signaled on Thursday that he and his allies will actively work to oppose Roy Moore's bid for Alabama's Senate seat after the conservative firebrand announced he was jumping into the race.
"We'll be opposing Roy Moore vigorously," McConnell told reporters after returning to the Capitol after a White House briefing on Iran.
McConnell's comments come after he warned, during an interview with the Associated Press shortly before Moore announced his bid, that he would "oppose him in every way."
Moore announced on Thursday afternoon that he would launch a bid for Alabama's Senate seat after previously winning the party's nomination in 2017, only to lose to now-Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) in a contentious special election.
His candidacy is a national nightmare for Republicans. They blame him for losing what they view as a safe GOP seat in a deeply red state that President Trump won easily in 2016.
Moore lost the race after facing multiple accusations of pursuing sexual and romantic relationships with teenage girls decades ago when he was in his 30s; he has denied any wrongdoing.

Trump backed someone other than Moore the last time around. I got the impression that Trump didn’t think Moore could win, and the other choice was satisfactory to him.
Yet Mitt Romney and John McCain got a pass.
Pssst, Mitch, go after the top 3 Democrats in Virginia.
Mitch involves himself in federal politics, not state.
The Left tried the same tactics against Justice Kavanaugh and those who supported him.
When the tactics are in doubt, the arguments are shakey at best.
Maybe Bannon and Gorka will stay out of it this time.
Moore should be looking for a like minded candidate to endorse - one who doesn’t have all the baggage he does. But he won’t, because it’s all about him. There are more important causes to fight for than getting the great Roy Moore elected to the Senate. I can think of one right off the bat - Nominating a conservative for Alabama’s Senate race who can actually win.
Moore somehow reminds me of Todd Akin.
They are forever toxic, rightly or not.
.
Moore ran and lost. He had his chance.
The GOP does not need to run the same loser with a checkered past again, he will lose again.
Moore might as well wear a permanent Kick My @SS Again! sign on his back. The Rats are already slobbering over the chance to annihilate him a second time.
GOP better get a damn good primary contender in the running, Dems will cross the isle to vote in primary trying to place Moore on the ticket in the general!!!
With Trump on this. It’s a strategic issue.
But GOPe will be the trouble maker if they intend to force Trump supporters to vote for McCainocrats.
Being from Alabama, I will make these three observations: (1) For every ten stories on Moore, five are hoaxes or fake, but the rest are true. So you spend a fair amount of time trying to settle on which are true or false. (2) A fair number of Alabamians (maybe a quarter of them) perceive Moore as a fake-GOP guy, and this act over the past twenty years has been just a fake political act to score votes. (3) Finally, Moore will be 73 years old next year. He should have run back in the 1990s. Age-wise, a fair number of voters are discounting him already.
Finally, on my own opinion...after former Gov Bentley’s paramour-friend episode, if you lay any drama out there, Ala-voters tend to believe the worst situation.
...why are so many on FR coming out against a solid conservative?
Because hes too southern. In case you havent noticed, theres a decidedly anti southern bias on FR. Especially if they have a southern accent. TV has rotted peoples brains with stereotypes of southern people being ignorant bigots.
And yet, its largely thanks to the ignorant South that anyone decent or conservative has come anywhere near the White House in the last 100 years.
He endorsed our insipid Martha McSally also, who snuck in the back door afterwards by appointment with our FR lefties cheering her on. She lost, but they love her. There are a lot of people here who don’t like real conservatives. FR has its share of Rino’s and neocons. Always has.
Same - I tweeted to him to make it clear he’s running on immature ego and he was not up to the task before and is even less so now...he won’t care though.
Based on Roy Moore taking the weekend before the last election off and his poor communication skills, I tend to agree with Trump and McConnell on this stance.
If Roy Moore is not treated fairly by the Party, maybe his supporters, and there are many, should stay home for the general election. I wonder if Trump will win Alabama again?
Trump actually liked Roy initially until that loser mcconnell got ahold of him. Trump, like all of us, is dependent on people’s input and he picked the wrong horse (mcconnell) to listen to. Mcconnell sabotaged Roy IN THE GENERAL ELECTION which hurt US, the people. That was a stunning move on his part and ushered in the libtard
Mark Levin aint God and he is wholly ignorant of the South
To the point of pathetic honestly
Roy Moore is an unelectable wing nut. He needs to go home and be quiet.
Trump and Mitch backed Luther then Trump backed Moore
It was a strange scenario
There is evidence Mitch actually helped Doug Jones since he saw Moore as a threat to his kingdom
Steve Brannon and Ben Carson and Sarah Palin campaigned for Moore
Breitbart throttled Strange
But the smear machine against Moore worked with suburban soccer moms which surprised me
I guess soccer moms in Yukon Denali and Tory Burch slides are the same everywhere
Emo amd whimsy....fickle
