It’s a huge mistake for the Democrats, and some of them know it, but they seem unable to stop themselves.

The funny thing, is that it is a mistake for some, but not for others. The Dems from true beleiver districts in California, Massachusetts and Chicago will roll up bigger margins for their showboating (and in some cases prevent primary challenges) but the Dems in "purple" districts or those who have needs that have nothing to do with Trump's personality may not be so impressed.

Very true.

But this becomes sort of a continuation of the Democrats' problem in 2016 with the Electoral College:

Hillary may have won the popular vote, but that doesn't matter. You need to win enough EC votes across the country to actually be the winner. They didn't focus on the Big Picture.

With impeachment, as you say, some Democrats in CA and MA and other places will be rock stars to their base. They will win in 2020 by huge margins. But for an individual office, a win is a win and the size of the win doesn't matter. But all across the country, how will the House and Senate be impacted after impeachment fails? I think the Democrats will, on the whole, be decimated. But I suspect the ones in CA and MA don't care about that. They aren't good at focusing on the Big Picture.
