You've got me all wrong. I think trashing MLK is a stupid move strategically for conservatives.
My point is this -- MLK's message - that we should judge people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character - is a conservative message today, and is a perfect weapon to use against the leftists and Social Justice Warriors. His opposition to segregation in all forms stands in direct opposition to the leftists now pushing for black-only graduations, etc..
For Republicans to push those messages of MLK is hoisting leftists on their own petard. It forces them to distance themselves from and even to trash MLK. It is a weapon that can help drive an even bigger wedge between racist progressives and many blacks who are starting to question their allegiance to the Democrat party. Trump made significant inroads among black males, and is continuing to do so as the economy improves.
How does trashing MLK help us with any of that? It's handing the leftists a weapon that should be our own: "See, those evil conservatives even trash a guy who urged color-blindness and peaceful opposition. They're clearly interested in neither, so any black people considering supporting Trump should see them for the racists they are."
We're shooting ourselves in the foot by attacking MLK.
That came out wrong and I apologize.
Great response.

Excellent observation. The validity of the accusations aside, trashing MLK is both tactically and strategically stupid. Do you want to feel good for a moment, or do you want to win the war against the Left? I choose the latter.
