Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law Thursday a measure outlawing the sale or possession of child-like sex dolls that lawmakers argue promote sexual urges among pedophiles.
However, some groups have argued just the opposite, saying those dolls can help prevent pedophiles from acting on those urges with actual children.
The legislation (SB 160) was sponsored by Sen. Lauren Book and was unanimously approved by both houses of the Legislature. Rep. Michael Gottlieb filed a companion measure in the House (HB 1107).
A person may not knowingly sell, lend, give away, distribute, transmit, show, or transmute an obscene, child-like sex doll, the legislation says.
Violation of the law is a third-degree felony, with subsequent violations being deemed second-degree felonies.
Groups such as the Prostasia Foundation, which identifies itself as a child sexual abuse prevention group, have spoken out against the legislation, arguing it will endanger children.
If we surveyed victims of childhood sexual abuse, I wonder how many would say they WISHED their abusers had a sex doll who might have taken their place?, asked Dr. James Cantor, who advises the group.
But Book has countered that claim in advocating for the bill. She once again made the case following the Governors signing of the legislation.
These are anatomically correct, lifelike silicone dolls that are eerily similar to real human children made for the sole purpose of sexual gratification, Book said.
Just as viewing child pornography lowers the inhibitions of child predators, so do these childlike sex dolls that have no place in the state of Florida. We want to make our state as unfriendly to child predators as possible.
Book, who is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, says she learned of the dolls through her work with Laurens Kids. That foundation was started by Book and offers help to abuse victims.
A December report from CBC details at least 42 such dolls being seized at the Canadian border in the previous two years. The sex dolls possess child-like dimensions and features, according to the piece.
And a few months earlier in Kentucky, officials attempted to arrest and charge a man who had purchased similar dolls from China. While law enforcement argued possession of the dolls was akin to possession of child pornography, a judge dismissed all charges against the man.
Doesnt this get catered to somewhere in lgbtxyz morass too?
One guy was taken to trial for writing about kiddie porn in a journal he had in his home. I don’t know how it came out.
What about hot-looking midgets?
Doesn’t this impact their rights?
It does not keep them from attacking children. It further desensitizes them, and increases the odds they will attack children.
There is no place in society for this behavior.
Killer: Whata you in for?
Butch: Cuddling up with a plastic child-like sex doll.
It staggers the imagination the lengths people will go to to justify their sin.
No way no how will these dolls protect children.
My Ex,,,
Let me know how it works out.
I rather doubt it. He gets his kicks fondling real children in public and on camera.
That about sums it up. We need to exile these creeps to a camp on some barren island in the Aleutians. These degenerates have no business being in normal society.
We think that.
Is it true? Were there any controlled studies, a group of incipient pedophiles with these dolls vs one without?
Unless and until a trustworthy study is done and independently verified, we're just guessing.
Banning them until they are proven to not increase harm to children is the prudent way to go.
Is this a fact or an opinion?
Yet "teen porn" is perhaps the most popular genre of pornography. There's no shortage or porn sites featuring barely 18 adult models wearing babydoll dresses and pigtails.
It's political suicide to oppose these types of laws. Nobody wants to be the "pro-child sex doll" candidate up for re-election. Only the hardiest Libertarian will stand up against it.
How much child porn is to much?
Couldn’t the same be said about guns and violent video games? Do they desensitize violence and make it more likely a person who plays them to act out violently?
I’m most curious about the concept of lending out one’s sex doll. It sounds like a terribly awkward scenario. On second thought, I’m not at all curious.
Hmmmm. I support the intent, but now we are touching on expression. Will be interesting to see what challenges might be brought to the law.
Somehow after just reading the headline knew it was not a Dem Gov doing this!
Or do they provide a relief?
