May’s ‘Bold Offer’ on Brexit Deal Just a ‘Retread’ of Old Ideas
Breitbart ^ | 20 May 2019 | Joe Markham

Posted on 05/20/2019 4:35:58 PM PDT by KC_Lion

A new leaked document shows that Theresa May’s plans for a “new” Brexit withdrawal agreement contains no new ideas or any substantial changes.

Prime Minister Theresa May, whose attempts to pass a version of her EU-approved withdrawal treaty have so far failed three times, has said of this new version of the deal that it would “represent a new, bold offer to MPs across the House of Commons, with an improved package of measures that I believe can win new support”.

However, speaking of a summary of the deal as it had been given to ministers, one unnamed Whitehall source said “there is nothing new in this at all. It is simply a retread of old ideas.”

The new bill is said to not contain any new ideas about how to bridge the political divide with the opposition Labour Party over issues such as membership of effective membership of the EU Customs Union.

Nor does it offer any new thinking about the issue of the contentious Irish “backstop”, designed to prevent a so-called “hard border” between Britain’s Northern Ireland and EU member-state the Republic of Ireland by allowing Brussels to economically annex the former.

....

However, Jeffrey Donaldson, the DUP chief whip, has already announced the party’s intention to vote against the new bill, saying “the difficulty remains for us that the backstop is still incorporated into the legislation. As things stand our position remains unchanged.”

One Tory MP, Sir Bill Cash, who has voted against the deal on the three occasions it has been proposed already, said, “this is pretty cosmetic stuff. It will not have any effect on Leave-supporting MPs and in fact there are votes coming back to our side from people who backed the deal last time.”

The Brits don’t want a hard border in Northern Ireland. Neither do the Irish.

If one is to be built, the EU will have to do it. There is obviously no need to cut off a part of the UK from the UK.

Yet, unless the Brits set up a border, they’ll have the EU immigrants coming in that way, which is what they don’t want.

The Brits voted in a national referendum that was explicitly non-binding and was an advisory referendum only.

It was only sworn to uphold later that year in 2016 when parliament agreed to request Article 50.

the referendum itself was officially non-binding and purely advisory

The Brits have said numerous times that they do not want and will not build a hard border in Northern Ireland. It’s the EU that is insisting on it due to their fear of goods flowing from the UK into the EU.

As for the referendum, it was promised for years and all parties in the UK swore IN ADVANCE to abide by the decision of the British people. They are free to break their word if they want.....but I suspect there will be severe electoral consequences for years and years to come for any political party which does.

Well there are two reasons

1. A referendum is not a common idea in Britain. In fact, until 2016 it was considered a tool only used by fascist states. This referendum was the 3rd such in the UK’s history. There is no constitutional means for this in the UK.

2. David Cameroon meant it as a “show” referendum which he wouldn’t lose. All polls were that he would win handily. It was only when Boris J and Gove used the opportunity to try and push their future candidature for PM did it unravel. BoJo and Gove believed that they would lose (meaning Remain would win) but that they would get enough public notice that they would win a political fight in the future.

It was a bloody waste of money - instead of doing it right and putting out explicitly as a two stage question:

1. Do you want to leave the EU and the customs union? Yes/No?
— if you vote No, then the process will be as follows....
2. If yes then which of the following 3 options do you choose?

Theresa May: Hard Border to force united Ireland

The EU isn't insisting on the hard border. It was the UK who gave the suggestion that the RoI put in passport checks on entry - thereby annexing RoI to the UK. The RoI rejected that, so the UK wants a border to keep out those pesky EU migrants.

May has certainly tried to fearmonger the British people with a hard border. Of course, British negotiators told the EU they do not want one and would not build one. It was the EU that has insisted there be a hard border to stop the flow of goods into the customs union.

The Brits could always step up police checks of ID for people in Northern Ireland and impose a mandatory ID check to travel from Northern Ireland to the rest of the UK. That would be no problem for British citizens from Northern Ireland. The UK need not build a hard border they do not want. It would then be the EU’s problem to worry about the flow of goods into Ireland.

They want to be separate but don’t want a border. What’s one great Brexit!

That would solve the problem but the DUP won't have that

Theresa went into bed with the DUP - northern ireland unionists. If she hadn’t called for the unnecessary elections in 2017 then the UK could have been out by now

The Northern Ireland Unionists do not want any sort of deal whereby NI is treated any differently to ther rest of the UK, they see this as Irish unification by the back door. Personally, I wish the NI unionists would just accept Irish unification and leave Great Britain as a territorially rationalised independent state, but they tend to get very upset at that suggestion, and it feels wrong to sell out some of the most loyal British citizens we have to become subjects of a country whose national identity is based around anti-Britishness and hostility to the British national identity.
