Without going into an hours-long conversation about all the ills of our postal system, I'll add one more and were done: the ranks of supervisors, 204-Bs, plant managers, and postmasters should be scoured for any semblance of misconduct and summarily fired with no benefits. The hiring practice of bringing in family members, parolees with violent crime / drug histories and political preference to the left should be immediately stopped.
And that's a hefty beginning, and only such.
Turn the system over to McDonald’s. They’ll have everything automated and priced cheap within those 5 years. Done.
All I know is:
1) If I order something it is normally at my house within a week - even if it is coming from the other side of the country.
2) Wife just got a letter from Japan in less then 10 days.
3) My local carrier is very nice and leaves her vehicle to drop a package at the front door when it doesn’t fit the mailbox.
4) The Postal inspectors I’ve dealt with for identity theft and lost packages were useless and basically despite evidence failed to following up on my case(s).
Things I haven’t verified:
1) I’ve heard that China and commercial entities gets preferential rates that don’t cover cost.
2) It’s a union location so I’m sure there is redundant bureaucracy and waste that should be eliminated.
3) There are contracts for Fedex and others to much of the transport - I doubt we are seeing the savings that such a contract should provide, and would guess we are actually subsidizing their normal ops.
It’s not run like a business because it’s not a business. It’s an arm of the government. A mail service is essential, even if it runs at a loss.
Money can be saved by eliminating those welfare-payments-disguised-as jobs, and not letting politicians appoint people as favors.
Yay!

It’s my fault. For years I’ve been mailing everything with 1 cent stamps. It cost the PO the same to print one of them as it does the forever stamp. I just use 50 of them at a time. I like the taste of the glue...
When I go to other countries...the post office is like a mini 7-11. They sell everything. Phone sims to boxes.
A little old fashion capitalism would help them.

The USPS pays the Federal treasury a flat $5 billion (or more) a year. For what? That is the difference between ‘’profit’’ (or break even’’) and deep in debt.
None the less, they have many times the people in ‘’management’’ than they need with many local Pos not even having a postmaster.
How many US corporations would still be in business if they were obligated to pre-fund their retiree healthcare benefits out to 75 years and be given 10 years to accomplish that task?
This is the burden Congress placed on the Post Office in 2006. Maybe its time to level the playing field.
I suspect their main problem is the huge financial load of their retirees - pensions & health care are independent of and considerably better than Social Security & Medicare, and there are a lot of recipients.
We let 500,000 walk across out border every 6 months without wages.
We don’t need the post office in this day and age. We have the internet, email, etc., not to mention the telephone. I bought 10 forever stamps five years ago and I only used 2! All I get is garbage in the mail anyway. I post my bills online and don’t even use checks anymore. Time to retire the post office.
We need to sell it, in whole or in part, in whatever pieces we can get buyers for it.
There will be no loss of jobs, overall; they will, most of them, shift to the private delivery services that buy the USPS. Some of the buyers might even suprise some people.
In some cases yes, the cost of getting something delivered may go up, and in other cases the end result may be lower consumer cost with more competition.
