UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres raised concerns Thursday that a concrete dome built last century to contain waste from atomic bomb tests is leaking radioactive material into the Pacific.
Speaking to students in Fiji, Guterres described the structure on Enewetak atoll in the Marshall Islands as "a kind of coffin" and said it was a legacy of Cold War-era nuclear tests in the Pacific...
...The "coffin" is a concrete dome, built in the late 1970s on Runit island, part of Enewetak atoll, as a dumping ground for waste from the nuclear tests.
Radioactive soil and ash from the explosions was tipped into a crater and capped with a concrete dome 45 centimetres (18 inches) thick.
However, it was only envisaged as a temporary fix and the bottom of the crater was never lined leading to fears the waste is leaching into the Pacific.
Cracks have also developed in the concrete after decades of exposure and there are concerns it could break apart if hit by a tropical cyclone.
Guterres did not directly address what should be done with the dome but said the Pacific's nuclear history still needed to be addressed.

The Runit Dome, also called "Cactus Dome" or locally "The Tomb", is a 46 cm (18 in) thick dome of concrete at sea level, encapsulating an estimated 73,000 m3 (95,000 cu yd) of radioactive debris, including some plutonium-239. not yet, but I did read an article that alleged that the Brits have been quietly scrubbing evidence of their Marshall Island tests involvement, so it’s probably around the corner, seeing how he accused us of ‘victimizing the Pacific’

the Japanese don’t ‘guilt’ as easily as the US.
The Marshalls are part of the “Freely Associated States”, which, along with Guam, are pushing for increased subsidies. Persuading the UN to visit and comment seems political chess. And, adds the activist element of ‘compensations’ to the pot. Which would up the ante on those subsidies and provide an excuse for repetative scientific grants. Along with the possibility of strengthening the image of a politicized UN which would insist on oversight of any ‘research’. (placing themselves as a middle-man between the FAS and the US)
I don't know - I'd guess not. AGW folks are following H.L. Meken's dictum, “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.”
These two seem to be refuting the 'hobgoblin' of Fukushima radiation destroying the Pacific Ocean.
I'd guess that they are 'straight shooters'.
