THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HAROLD ARLEN
THE WIZARD OF OZ
Harold and Yip hit a long dry spell after The Singing Kid. There were three years of failed Broadway shows and failed movies at Warner Brothers along with failed songs that populated them. Then in 1939 the two men struck gold.
What is astonishing today is that this movie failed to break even in its initial release in spite of a massive hit song and a bunch of Oscar nominations. Only during its re-release in 1949 did it make a profit for MGM. When it was licensed for TV in 1956 the money really poured in for the studio.
DING-DONG! THE WITCH IS DEAD
This is a clip from the 1939 movie. Its the most enthusiastic death song ever written.
