“Even the church does not recognize it as real.”

False:

Pope Pius XI (1922-1939): “… certainly not the work of any human hand.”

Pope Pius XII (1939-1958): “The linen in which Joseph of Arimathea enveloped the sacred remains of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Pope John XXIII (1958-63): “This can only be the Lord’s own doing.”

Pope Paul VI (1963-78): “…The image from the Holy Shroud reveals to us the human and divine personality of Christ.”

Pope John Paul II (1978-2005):“The Holy Shroud is the most
splendid relic of the Passion and Resurrection.”

Pope Benedict XVI (2005-2013):  “…should be seen as a
photographic document of the darkest mystery of faith — that of Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection.”

Pope Francis I (2013- ): “By means of the Holy Shroud, the unique and supreme Word of God comes to us.”

Swordmaker, I love what you do in these threads. As my contribution, here are some recent testing results:

In 2013, Dr. Giulio Fanti tested certified, unused threads from the 1988 C-14 Test Sample Area. The tests showed that the Shroud is much older than the 1988 C-14 test results show!
Dr. Fanti is Professor of Mechanical & Thermal Measurement, University of Padua.

Dr. Fanti performed 3 new types of dating tests:
(1.) Multi-Parametric Mechanical tests
(2.) Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) tests
(3.) Raman Spectroscopy tests
Test Samples from 9 cloths dated from 3,000 BC to 1,000 AD were used as Control Samples.

Final results: These original, unused C-14 Test Sample threads produced the following dates with 95% certainty:
Multi-Parametric Mechanical Tests: a range from 1 AD - 800 AD.
FTIR Spectroscopy: a range from 700 BC - 100 AD.
Raman Spectroscopy: a range from 700 BC - 300 AD.

Average Date: A Range from 280 BC - 220 AD!

I think that such tests are unproven as accepted date testing methods in archaeology. . . and need to undergo a lot of peer-review in other less controversial topics before they will ever be accepted as such. That being said, I am not surprised, but I wonder what markers Dr. Fanti used in each test as a date indicator in each test.
