Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Browns Da Vinci Code thriller, caught fire in March.

Music history, too. Key developments in polyphony and hence Western music are directly tied to Notre Dame. It is a loss on so many levels.
Yes, well said. It is often engineers here who denigrate liberal arts education but liberal arts was once a very vital tool in educating people. I realize that it has fallen on very hard times but for those of us who graduated before today’s pc autocracy, we know exactly what a loss this cathedral is to western civilization.
What did he say?
I agree, no legitimate academic activity should be denigrated.
If they are going to rebuild, they will need people with expertise in that field.
But, depending on what is left, maybe they should leave it like Coventry Cathedral.
Yes, an interesting idea. But in looking at Coventry, we know who wrecked it. Something we’ll never know with Notre Dame.
I notice all the news media have dropped this significant story and moved back onto hating Trump.
I majored in English, graduated 1972, and that (plus factory work) were the two most important factors, more important than medical school, to make me the doctor I am.
I read that the Cathedral is owned by the French government, and had been in horrible disrepair - with pieces of stone falling off etc. It was estimated it would cost ~$180 million to repair it, and the French government only have $50 million. The rest had to be raised. Sounds to me like it was neglected for a fairly long time. That is really sad.
“I wonder if the Palestinians are celebrating like they did on 9/11”
BREAKING: French billionaire François-Henri Pinault pledges 100 million ($113 million) to help rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral
I love PDJT but wish he would sometimes not be so public with his quick statements. He's a package deal and would not have won the election without twitter, etc. so I guess he won't stop.
Exactly my reaction, Livius. I could not function today just as I couldn’t the day the towers fell.
This is the end of Western Civilization.
Because Americans, no matter how patriotic, keep sending their precious children to the place that teaches Western Civilization is just as good as Barbarian hordes.
The great novel, “Notre Dame de Paris” by Hugo immortalized this Cathedral. It IS France.
I see your points.
They’d mock him for saying “Good Morning!” (and I believe they have), so I care not for the usual chatter from the usual suspects.

You just couldn't help yourself, could you. You just had to go and make anti-Catholic remarks on this thread.
You should be ashamed of yourself. So why is doubting the authenticity of a relic necessarily anti-Catholic, while do you really think that we would not have many snide remarks from Catholics if the news was that of church related to Luther burning down? You mean you just couldn't help yourself, but just had to go and make a aniti-anti-Catholic remarks on this thread? Seems like a knee-jerk reaction by one of a class of RCs who cannot tolerate whatever seems to slight their earthly object of devotion in the slightest.
There are thousands of claimed relics associated with_Jesus , from thirty Holy Nails that were venerated as relics across Europe in the early 20th century to the "Holy Foreskin of Jesus," and while only relics that have been certified as authentic can be exposed for veneration by the faithful (I do not know if the wood in ND was), yet the means of determining this are far from sure.
But if you insist that these pieces of wood (22 more are in a church in PA) are authentic pieces from the cross of Christ because Rome said they are, then you have made this thread about the veracity of Rome. And thus you should be ashamed of yourself .
“I agree that accellerants were used.”
I read from several sources the workers had all left by that time of day. There was no workers around to make an electrical spark. A dropped cigarette? I could understand if it was a big pile of dried leaves but on a wood plank??
Heard “the wood was totally dried out”. It France, not the Sahara! There is rain, there is humidity. Hard pressed to believe the roofing material was 100% water proof.
I think “some people did something”. For crying out loud! Churches in in France are getting vandalized on almost a daily basis for at least the past three months!!!
This is probably a jihadist coup de grâce.
The 6:30 pm Mass with the Archbishop is on Sundays. But according to the “Paris City Vision” site I got when I googled, there was supposed to be a 6:15 pm Mass today. So your point still stands.
Unless you can point to someplace where that actually happened, you're engaging in slander. Last time I checked, that was not Christian behavior.
