Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Brown’s ‘Da Vinci Code’ thriller, caught fire in March.

Buildings, like Notre Dame, represent the rise of the Judeo-Christian Western Culture that re-shaped the world.
It is somewhat fitting that it is lost as Judeo-Christian Western Culture collapses.

The Paris Fire Brigade is part of the French Army. Originally formed to defend Paris and later evolved into a fire brigade. Their selection process is arduous and the training extensive.
What we saw on display were their skill with various fire fighting techniques, ladder climbing, with full kit ... a great deal of emphasis is put on athleticism with workouts on parallel bars, tumbling, etc., close to a Olympian level this all part of their regular training. As a former Marine they impressed me as being military in bearing and definitely ‘squared away’.
This is a tragedy because the Cathedral simply cannot be rebuilt in it’s former glory. The history is destroyed.
Modern buildings are soulless monstrosities. The original Notre Dame is irreplaceable. This isn’t just some little storefront church that could be easily replaced.
Shepherd Smith and Neil Cavuto should be suspended or fired for their outrageous behavior today when a guest actually had the nerve to suggest arson.
Faux News is just as bad as CNN.

It will eventually put out. with walls of stone and the fire started in the roof, which is likely heavy timer, it is basically a furnace full of highly combustible materials. It will take DAYS to get it put out, the only question is how much burns in the process.

We are lucky that SO many of them seem to be stupid. But they only have to be smart a few times. It wouldn’t surprise me if the contractor had to meet hiring guidelines for a certain percentage of new immigrants, etc.
One athletic maneuver they might have employees was showing up at the fire. It took them two hours before the first dribble.
Why would any have to see a ‘message’ in this building burning...it was a construction site fire that could not be contained and then torched the ‘original’ roofs and siding which was a tinder box of aged wood.... The towers will likely go as well.
On the other hand what a marvelous work of God that there has been no deaths nor major injuries, that he helped all get to safety..

Now Neil Cavuto is pulling a Sheppard Smith when Bill Donohue makes the assertion of the possibility of those who have previously desecrated Cathedrals.
Neil Cavuto just dissed and hung up on Bill Donohue of The Catholic League, the second Bill mentioned the other factual desecrations of French Catholic churches in the last few months. Cavuto pulled a Shep; they are all too scared to be accused of even a HINT of terrorism conspiracy theories. They both shut it down. No inquiry or questioning of the timing of this tragedy, as it’s Holy Week, allowed.
