Texas Tech Medical School, Under Pressure From Education Dept., Will Stop Using Race in Admissions
New York Times ^ | April 9, 2019 | Anemona Hartocollis

A prominent Texas medical school will stop considering race or ethnicity in deciding whether to admit applicants, as part of an agreement with the Education Department’s civil rights office.

The president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center signed the agreement in February, 14 years after the department began investigating a complaint filed by an anti-affirmative action group. The agreement is the first of its kind for the Education Department under Secretary Betsy DeVos, and comes as the Trump administration continues its hard turn against the use of race in admissions.

Roger Clegg, general counsel for the Center for Equal Opportunity, which filed the original complaint, said on Tuesday that the agreement could pave the way for similar actions at other schools.

“It shows that the Trump administration is serious about enforcing the civil rights laws in a way that protects the rights of all Americans to be free from discrimination,” Mr. Clegg said. “The more schools that stop using racial preferences, the harder it will be for other schools to continue using racial preferences.”

Affirmative action programs are under renewed scrutiny in courts and by federal authorities. Harvard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are both facing court challenges to their admissions procedures that could reach the Supreme Court. The Trump administration is investigating allegations of discrimination against Asian-American applicants at Harvard and Yale.

The administration has made clear its position on the use of race in admissions, abandoning Obama-era policies that argued for the “compelling interests” of diversity to college campuses and encouraging race-neutral admissions methods.

Jin Hee Lee, senior deputy director of litigation at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc., said the Texas Tech agreement was part of a broader pattern of chipping away at affirmative action.

I recall we had only two blacks who were also both SFC’s in my SF unit in Vietnam. They were damn good recon team leaders. One was shot/stitched from one upper arm /shoulder to the other with an AK. He and I were in private rooms at Womack Army Hospital, FT Bragg. His wife had to feed him as he lost the use of both arms. SFC Little had ordered the white SGT E-5 to leave him in Cambodia. The young E-5 did a helluva job getting him out.

The black grievance industry has squandered 50 years of affirmative action by stressing victimhood over taking advantage of opportunity.

The rest of the country is fed up with the whining and excuses.

Well this is about admissions but what you describe is under the greater umbrella of Affirm. Act.. STEM fields admissions of today are all about sex based admissions. That constitutes the majority of affirmative action admittances at most universities.

“14 years. Glad to see this case was settled so quickly.”

I’m guessing for 8 of those years...

...the case file collected dust...while languishing in a file drawer...in an unused file cabinet...in a dingy, unlit storage room...in a building slated for demolition...across town from the Education Department’s main office.

By now quotas have done all the good they are ever going to do.

What remains for quotas to accomplish now is all bad.

This ought to get Trump more of the Jewish vote.

Seriously? The only way Jews, as a demographic, are going to vote for Trump is if he turns hard left before 2020. Jews, as a demographic, in their voting habits, are hard wired wrong.

And, because of the preferential treatment blax receive in med school admission; because of points added to test scores; because this all runs the risk of allowing lesser intelligent people to become physicians; some whites won't consider a black physician.

It's not racism. It's common sense. Why take the risk when it comes to one's (or, one's family's) personal health?

we should nuke it.

As we should all race based preferential treatment of blax. Seriously, if they haven't leveled the playing field yet, then it's obvious they're not even in the game.

Yet, in spite of the obvious, the 2020 pimps running for office in the liberal camp are even trying to entice the Entitlement Crowd with hints of reparations.

"What difference, at this point, does it make?"

Since race and sex are up to the determination of the individual, anybody is eligible to apply as a minority. If Alan Bakke had only imagined this tactic...

I said, “ought to” in the sense of “a rational person would realize he’s acting in their interest” in an ideal world.

I have Jews in my extended family, and I’d say 75 or 80% will mindlessly pull the “D” lever, even though Tlaib, AOC, and Omar are perfectly representative Democrats.

“Well that’s good but the elephant in the room is sex based admissions.”

Why? On the form where it says sex you just put: it depends.

I lost 2 different promotions during my highest working years. In both cases, the person who got the position thru Affirmative Action could not & DID NOT do the job worth a hoot. I m talking about accounting. They didn’t know accounting, didn’t have any math skills, and were unable to work without minute by minute supervision and glorious support.

After the 2nd one happened—I quit my job. Enough! I took another job for less money, but for more future promotion. It took 2 1/2 people to do the basics of my desk, and all the special reports I prepared were no long being done.

I finally went out on my own in 1980, doing bookkeeping for small businesses, and doing all the work myself. I still have one client-—and have done his bookkeeping for over 49 years.

Affirmative Action hiring has been a joke since the first day it was implemented. I was raised on MERIT grading in schools, and on MERIT promotions for doing a good job. I have learned to totally hate anyone associated with Affirmative Action Hiring. Take that last sentence any way you wish.

The military academies use race. Here is an admissions board member at one academy.
