Jury rejects Harry Reid's lawsuit against fitness band maker he blamed for injuries

A jury in Las Vegas flatly rejected former Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid's lawsuit against an exercise band maker he blamed for injuries — including blindness in one eye — he suffered when the stretchy device slipped from his grasp and he fell face-first a little more than four years ago.

After eight days of testimony, the eight-member civil trial jury deliberated about an hour before declaring that Reid never proved the first of 10 questions they were asked to decide: that the device Reid, former senator from Nevada, used that day was a TheraBand made by Ohio-based Hygenic Corp.

Jurors never saw the actual device because Reid's adult son, attorney Leif Reid, disposed of it soon after Harry Reid was injured.

Reid and his wife, Landra Gould, weren't in the courtroom when the verdict was read. The 79-year-old former Democratic Party leader used a wheelchair throughout the two-week trial, following treatment for pancreatic cancer and back surgery.

Their lawyer, James Wilkes II of Tampa, Florida, said he respected the Nevada jury's decision. "I may not agree with the outcome, but I agree with the way we got there," Wilkes said.

TheraBand lawyer Laurin Quiat was subdued in victory.

"My client always believed in the product, believes that the product is safe, is not unreasonably dangerous for anyone, and they stand behind it," he said. "That's all I have to say."

Reid and his wife sought unspecified monetary damages because they said the product was defective and the company failed to warn the public it was dangerous for elderly people like Reid to use.

I still say the “machine” that tore Harry up was named Guido.

How did this even get to court? Even IF this company made the band, how is it their fault he slipped because it fell off? That’s like suing because your jogging pants fell down and you tripped. What the heck?

You really have to sit in on the case to know the details. That said, I was introduced to resistance bands because of a minor injury. The therapy center gave me a couple of bands and a few pages of instructions to help improve my range of motion for the particular body part. If Harry Reid would have won the case, I would have been given 50 pages of disclaimers and 2 pages of exercise instructions.

Only a Democrat would sue somebody for not being told how to use a rubberband.

Yes.

And WHO puts the exercise band around the handle of a shower door?

Oh, I forgot, who exercises in the bathroom in the first place?

(besides teenage boys)

I hope Reid is forced to pay the legal fees of the company that made the exercise machine.

The old bastard should be praying instead of filing false lawsuits.

Yes, makes sense it would be the same in Reno. I worked trade shows in Vegas, and drayage, assembly, electrician, and other services were 2-to-3 times more expensive than other cities. Teamsters, SEIU, IBEW, UFCW — the wiseguys take a large cut from the union locals.

Because the culprit was an enforcer....not a resistance band

There are different colors with those straps.
He could have testified that he was hit by a faulty black strap and muttered in a dialect afterwards.

Back then it was a southern ....in her 30s....divorcée who changed his life....he was a widower in his mid 50s
I was 24 then....I’m 61 now

Crazy story how I met him involving NASA gold.....and me on the phone with Sam the Plumber and Pappy Parisi pleading mercy for an associate of mine who had run afoul of some serious....very serious people

I was so naive...and fortunate

Fortunately they weren’t in the mood to whack some rather stupid southern boys.....

We had a local wise guys branch.....the Bonofigliolis but I doubt they coulda helped me even though I was friends with the son ...they reported to Carlos Marcelo in New Orleans

I was in way over my fool head
