Tax-return fight tests Mnuchin's loyalty to Trump

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin faces a challenging test after Democrats formally requested President Trump's tax returns.

Mnuchin has been one of Trump's most loyal Cabinet members, defending the president's policies and personal conduct when others have shied away.

Now as the president's chief line of defense he will have to balance his loyalty to Trump against a request that many experts say leaves him little wiggle room.

“[The] request tests Mnuchin’s oath of office: Whether Mnuchin will faithfully execute the laws of the United States, or whether Mnuchin will bend to the will of the president,” said Steve Rosenthal, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center who testified before Congress in February about the need to request Trump’s tax returns.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) Wednesday evening sent IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig a request for six-years worth of Trump’s personal and business tax returns. Neal made the request under a part of section 6103 of the federal tax code that states that the Treasury Secretary “shall furnish” tax returns to the chairmen of Congress’s tax committees upon written request, so long as the documents are viewed in a closed session.

Note to Mnuchin: Ignore it. By November 2020 we will have a new Congress. The House can sit on their demand for the next 19 months.

Just tell them to screw themselves.

He can simply say - given the partisan nature of the committee and past history of leaks, Trump has no expectation of privacy.

The Congress has no right to examine the tax returns of the President or any other US person. If leaked, the publisher should be exterminated for cause

"Tax-return fight tests Mnuchin's loyalty to Trump" No, it doesn't.

"if the Secretary determines that such disclosure would seriously impair Federal tax administration."

The wording of Article [IV] (Amendment 4 - Search and Seizure), U. S. Constitution is also crystal clear. "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

What the Dems are doing violates the President's rights under the 4th Amendment. They have no honest basis to demand all his tax and business records prior to becoming president.

Where’s the crime?

Democrats need to show cause.

The tax returns they are seeking were filed BEFORE Trump was an elected official.

Democrats are doing opposition research for 2020, demanding Trump’s tax returns for political purposes.

As you are required by law to fill out and sent in a tax return

Isnt it a violation of the 5th amendment for any other organization of the government to use that information try and prosecute you besides the IRS

Really pretty simple IRS says it required this information you say I’m taking the 5th I will not self incriminate

So IRS by law is required to build a Chinese wall that the information can’t be used by anyone else and then they can answer for the information because its Not a violation of 5th at that information can’t be used to incriminate you

You have to report truthfully because they’re only interested in getting your money for taxas

GREAT POINT---- The IRS by law is required to build a Chinese wall around your tax info so that it can’t
be used by anyone else. You have to report truthfully because the IRS is only interested in getting your money.

Just goes to show how predatory....and desperate.....the Democrats are.

What surprises me is that no Trump hater on the inside of the IRS, with a thumb drive, has not leaked his tax information.

No doubt, the IRS is on old mainframes which makes it more difficult to hack.

What happens if Trump demands tax returns from EVEY member of Congress & some prior members? The Clinton’s? Harry Reid?
Barbara Boxer?

Would Munchin have to open those up, also?

This might work in Trump’s favor....Not very many in Congress will want to comply.

Sounds more like a high stakes Poker game.

And again that my understanding..im not a lawyer or a judge..but I do understand simple logic

If the 5th meets anything you can not be forced to incriminate your self..so you have the problem in this on could take the 5th on everything and not file..

So for the same reason a prosecutor can force testimony by giving you immunity (hey now you have to tell me everything truthfully because now nothing you tell me will incriminate you)...

the IRS information provide by a taxpayer can not be revived as coming from that taxpayer

Again that my understanding

But lawyer and judges twist logic and reason all out of whack just get what they want

Hell your communication with your lawyer is to be priviledged also but we saw what happened with Cohen and Trump

I find it singular that liberals always expect republicans to support the Constitution in cases like this, while they insist upon no such thing, of themselves.

Relax, everybody! It will be in a closed session, which, as we KNOW, would never be leaked or otherwise harmed./SARC
