Otto Warmbier's parents have spoken out after President Trump stated that he took North Korean leader Kim Jong-un "at his word" after Kim denied any hand in Warmbier's death, which occurred after the American college student spent 17 months in captivity in North Korea and was returned to the U.S. in 2017 in a vegetative state.
"We have been respectful during this summit process. Now we must speak out. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for the death of our son Otto. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for unimaginable cruelty and inhumanity. No excuses or lavish praise can change that."
Do I think Kim lies on this issue. Yes.
If Trump said he believed Kim, then yes I think that was wrong.
I think should have said nothing.
And as much as I think the man was wrong to go to North Korea - that sufficient knowledhge of the brutality of the regime was well published before hand - NOTHING excuses what happened to him while imprisoned in the North’s dictatorship. NOTHING.
Hope that no one you love ever gets murdered. This was a terrible mistake by Trump. He has got to walk this back. Any right-minded, compassionate person can see that this was wrong!
Agreed
What’s your problem? You one of those libs now a days where it your way (opinion) or the highway? If you got a dumb ass kid who died in NK why don’t you just come out and say so?
Trump said Kim, the Wambiers said Kim and his regime.
Typical liberal displacement.
Their real problem is they cannot admit that their leftist views are ultimately responsible for their son’s pro-communist naivete.
I call BS on all the outrage at President Trump. Otto was an imbecile to travel to NoKo in the first place and his parents are equally liable for his death for not teaching their son better risk avoidance instincts.
I have zero sympathy for idiots. In my book, stupidity should be painful. We’d see less of it then.
I dont see why, in the first place, Trump had to make a public statement in this matter. Whatever he had to say should have been discussed with the parents privately. It was ridiculous, thought so at the time, and knew the parents would push back and this would bite Trump.
I don’t have anyone stupid enough to go to North Korea or any other communist country and commit a burglary. Stuff it.
They are right that the North Korean regime is responsible for what happened to their son. Unfortunately we will never learn the truth about WHO exactly did what to him, most likely those prison guards at whatever facility he was being held in got pissed off at him and did God knows what to him. Did Kim Jong Un order it, who knows, we will never know. Other hostages came back healthy(underweight but otherwise healthy) so what happened to Otto, we will never know those answers
If Trump can get a deal that means NK will dump the nukes then that means that Otto did not die in vain.
I remember when Otto returned home, seeing the tweets online from lefties, they were saying how he got what he deserved and that he was a dumb ass for ever going to North Korea
Stole? Is it grand theft felony in any other country in the world to remove a cheap junk poster from a wall to take as a souvenir? It’s comparable to lifting a towel from Motel Six, or an ashtray from Hard Rock Cafe. Many tourists do dumb things. Do they deserve the death penalty, after months of torture? Trump is on the wrong side of rational thinking here. The sooner he admits it, the better for the 2020 campaign.
Wasn’t this asked during a press conference?
Guys, check Trump’s TWitter feed.
Looks to me like Axios is trying to gin up a game of lets-you-and-him-fight.
How about we don’t oblige.
I agree with their conclusion, as far as their son’s fate was concerned.
Now, what do you do about that?
Do we shove that fact in Kim’s face and simply cast any chance of a non-nuclear agreement out the window?
Life simply isn’t fair at times. What kid by 18 years of age hasn’t whined, “But that isn’t fair!”, a hundred times?
This is one time when the good of the many does outweigh the rights of the few.
Should we go to the U.N., accuse Kim and get nothing over a period of time. Or should we do the best we can to obtain a non-nuclear North Korea that has morphed into a nation that is still evil, but is not intent on sending nuclear weapons to our territory or the territory of our allies?
Parents, you have my deepest sympathy. I wish things had turned out different. May God help you come to terms with this.
I don’t like it, but that’s the way it is.
Sooooo, you would go to NK on a personal trip?
Good grief...what kind of rock have you been living under to not be cognizant of that brutal, communist regime?
“Who in their right mind would choose to go to NK”
Our horrible education system idealizes communist countries. These kids must think visiting NK is like visiting another US state protected by the constitution. In reality, most of these governments are run by power hungry monsters.
Why do I see so many jerks like you on this thread? People who haven’t posted in months? How much are you getting paid by Trump’s PR people? Are you paid by the word or by the paragraph?
The loss of their son is tragic. But shame on them! If it weren’t for President Trump, they would never have seen their son, again, dead or alive. Have a little gratitude! Fyi, Wikipedia just refuses to give President Trump credit for anything. The Otto Warmbier page says, “In June, 2017, the U.S.government secured his release”. Dogs!
Obama was President when Otto visited. Had Trump been, tragedy likely would have never happened.
