Chicago cops laid out their case against "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett Thursday morning, accusing the TV star of orchestrating an elaborate hoax involving two "bogus" hate crimes -- one involving an alleged attack, and one involving a threatening letter -- all in order to get a pay raise.
Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Smollett orchestrated a "phony attack" in order to take "advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career."
"I'm left hanging my head and asking why," a visibly upset Johnson told reporters. "Why would anyone, especially an African-American man, use the symbolism of a noose to make false accusations? How could someone look at the hatred and suffering associated with that symbol...how can an individual who has been embraced by the city of Chicago turn around and slap everyone in this city by making this false claim?"
He added, "Bogus police reports cause real harm."

Well, that commentary pretty much destroys any chances of holding any trial in Chicago. Could be on purpose, they don’t need the expense of holding OJ Simpson II.

You really thought a fake hate crime hoax would go to trial? Can you point to an example of this happening?
It’s good that they try to express a higher morality and idealism but the truth is we can easily see why someone would use this kind of hoax to promote themselves and their career. Also this was not just a lynching hoax it was an anti trump supporter anti-White hoax.
That statement makes it sound like this was a crime against black people which in a way it was but certainly white people and conservatives were the 1st targets and victims of this hoax.

So he DID fake the letter too, those are FEDERAL charges. Postal inspectors!!!!!!!!
The motive? He was NOT getting fired, he was pissed off they wouldn’t give him a RAISE.

Wrong. It’s Felony Disorderly Conduct which in Illinois carries a sentence of 1-3 years in State prison and a $25,000 fine.

Yeah, but it’s still valid...just because it didn’t REALLY happen...everybody KNOWS that all Trumpers WANT to commit this kind of hate crime ‘cause we’re all violent hateful racists...right?/s
This kind of hoax is not good for any group and it should be punished to the full extent of the law. Stop and consider if there had been riots over it - kind of surprised there was not.
I am not familiar with his work, but I hope he is a good actor because he will never be a decent director and can’t write a script to save his life.
