‘When I Was A Kid’: Elizabeth Warren Makes Bold Claim About Minimum Wage ($1.25/hr)

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren claimed on Saturday that when she was a child, a family of three could live on minimum wage. “Back when I was a kid, a minimum-wage job could support a family of three,” she tweeted. “Today, a full-time minimum-wage job in America won’t keep a mama and a baby out of poverty.”

...

No one disputes that today’s minimum wage would not provide sustainable income for a family of two, much less three. Warren’s initial claim — that “a minimum-wage job could support a family of three” when she was a child — only holds true in part.

Warren was born in 1949. In 1960, she would have been 11 years old. The minimum wage at that time was $1. Assuming a 40-hour work week, the annual pay would have been $2080. The poverty line in 1960, for a family of three, was $2322 annually.

In 1965, when Warren was 16 years old, the minimum wage had risen to $1.25. Again assuming a 40-hour work week, the annual pay would have been $2600. The poverty line in 1965 for the same size family was $2514, making Warren’s claim just barely possible at that time. But possible or not, Warren ignores two very important factors with regard to minimum wage.

First, who actually earns it. Fewer than three percent of Americans earn minimum wage as of 2017 — and the majority of them are young. Workers under 25 only make up about 20 percent of all hourly paid workers, but they account for close to half of those who are paid minimum wage. Minimum wage earners also tend to be primarily part-time (fewer than 35 hours per week)...

When Warren was a ‘kid’....people were still riding Mustangs (the horse, not the car).

Pretty good loot for carving peace pipes.

Yes, I like that theme:

“Back when I was a kid,...we lived in a teepee."
“Back when I was a kid,...we used to ground corn on a large rock."....

In her day minimum wage was three beads of wampum and as much buffalo jerky as you could eat.

I remember making minimum wage in HS. Spent it all on movies, hamburger/fries, and school clothes (we had a great local men's store) with nothing leftover.

Came to about $15 a week part-time.

After getting exposed for fabricating her Injun heritage, Warren has increasingly seemed not quite right in the head.

Lately, she comes across an a high mileage AOC. Look at her eyes in this photo. Traces of AOC...

Back in ‘61 I made $2 an hour at the local car wash and I sure didn’t think I could live on that because I could only work 4 hours a day. I joined the Navy at $75 a month instead which worked out to less than 30 cents an hour, if that. Go figure! Of course, three hots and a cot plus a lot of pushups was included.

“Today, a full-time minimum-wage job in America won’t keep a mama and a baby out of poverty.”

Warren's handlers must have focus tested the phrase "mama and baby". Warren uses it incessantly.

Tighten the border and you won’t have to raise minimum wage.

Her claim at the time is probably realistic if you lived on a farm and spent your time on growing food. My grandparents did it. What little money they made off of farm crop sales was used to keep an old pickup running and to buy dry goods. My grandmother had a double barrel shotgun. Many a day she would make breakfast with eggs right from the henhouse and bacon from the smokehouse. She would go out after and get rabbits or squirrels for the mid day meal.

Hand to mouth living.

Why are you guys getting on Warren’s case?

It was never easy for her. She was born a poor indian child. She remember the days, sittin’ on the porch with her family, singin’ and dancin’ down in Oklahoma...

I recall in the late 60’s making a fixed salary of $300 per month. I think that equates roughly to a buck 73 an hour.

I lived with my parents. I could likely pay rent, support the car needed to get to work, buy groceries and pay utilities on that wage, but raising a family would have been out of the question.

This lady is talking to the mindless, those that passed through the school systems and learned nothing except gimme, gimme, now, now.

At my college job from ‘66-’68 I made 90 cents an hour as a waitress, plus tips. Tips were good.

Liberals are pathological liars and, what's worse is that they have a symbiotic relationship with the media. Ergo, nobody ever holds anybody accountable for that sin.

Now if a conservative tells a lie, or, makes a simple mistake... Katie, bar the door!
