Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay, MPs and government officials will discuss alternative arrangements to the Irish backstop as three days of talks begin.

The Alternative Arrangements Working Group, with Leave and Remain MPs, will meet for the first time on Monday after the Commons voted to find another way of avoiding a hard Irish border.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has said "existing technology" could be used.

The Irish PM said the UK was reviewing ideas that had "already been rejected".

>>>They have a much better border in the Irish Sea. :^)

There is no border at the Irish Sea. Goods and people can move freely from NI to the rest of the UK.

The open border is an essential component of the Good Friday Agreement, which ended decades of Republican/Unionist violence in 1998. It was not signed just by a ‘traitor British politician’, but by all the main parties to the violence, by the British and Irish governments, and subsequently endorsed by large majorities in referendums both north and south of the border.

Closing the border now would risk much, much more than just trade.

I give a high probability for Jean-Claude Juncker and his EU pukes to give the UK a 6-12 month extension past the March 29, 2019 deadline for a soft or hard Brexit. Theresa May has been a complete disaster on this but let’s admit that most Tories in Parliament are anti-Brexit so she has a thankless task.

Juncker has been very cruel and manipulative in his demands and terms for the UK to leave the EU. In the end a hard Brexit is the best way.

Yes, but it's limited by how many ferries and flights they have.

The ferry traffic is substantially down in the past few years. :^)

Hundreds of thousands of irish men women and children were deprived of heir land, killed, injured, impoverished, robbed, starved, denied their civil rights, and enslaved by the british. Mountbatten was sent into *that* situation by the British. Given the full context, Maybe mountbatten was just another unfortunate victim of british imperialism.

The problem is that they don’t KNOW what they want. They haven’t even decided yet, 2.5 years after the referendum

She knows marketing. It would be bad if Trump responded to her - it would give her the publicity she craves.

it’s not that simple. And the Brits benefited a lot by being part of the EU trade community.

“Real Brits” are getting cold feet. The polls suggest that if a referendum were held today the vote would be even closer than in the past and most likely Leave would lose. the reason is that most who voted leave didn’t want a HARD Brexit with no free movement of goods, services. They wanted no free movement of European people (but were ok with immigrants from Africa,Asia, the Americas etc)

Most “Leave” voters didn’t want free flow of Europeans into Britain (but were ok with Africans, Asians, Americans etc. moving in). Keeping the Irish border open means that Europeans can come into the UK. And it doesn’t help with the fact that the western european supply chains crossing the Channel

well, it’s kinda like, but to a lesser extent, Pennsylvania leaving the Union. There are tons of trade agreements, free movements, past payments back and forth etc. to figure out.

No, it wasn’t a “traitor politician” but the Good Friday agreement - signed by all. This ended the Northern Ireland troubles.

I've got a better idea that would allow Brexit to happen with no issue

technically, according to government of ireland, the proper name for ireland is (and suprisingly this is news to some, perhaps) “ireland.”

the brexit polls have been wrong in the past, and there is no particular reason to presume their accuracy has improved... would you not agree...

Yes, I would agree with you. I do however travel to the UK a lot on business outside London and anecdotally nearly all of the country folk I’ve met who voted Leave now have changed their minds. Not scientific I agree, but there’s that
