More than a thousand inmates have been stuck in freezing cells at a federal jail on the Brooklyn waterfront that has had limited power and heat for at least this week, according to federal public defenders and leaders of the union representing the jails corrections officers.
They just stay huddled up in the bed, said June Bencebi, a case manager at the jail and the treasurer of the local chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents about 500 corrections officers at the jail.
The jail, the Metropolitan Detention Center, houses more than 1,600 inmates and lies in an industrial swath near the waterfront in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Some inmates are linked to high-profile drug trafficking and terrorism cases, while others are comparatively anonymous New Yorkers awaiting trial.

Why not all of them no matter what they did? Just get rid of them as soon as they are found guilty of any crime period.

I was being sarcastic with an idiot who thinks it’s ok. Please tell me you are being sarcastic also. Or are you on the same list as he.
The government has a legal mandate to protect inmates, unlike, say, any obligation to protect the kids at the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas school.
Not everyone who goes to trial is guilty. That’s what the trial is for. This facility also houses people awaiting trial, which should give pause for thought.
The article says they are waiting for trial. They don’t get speedy trials back there. Could be 3 months or more just to get a court date. That alone is wrong in it’s self.
I’ve been following this fellow named Nathaniel Barlam on Youtube; he’s been making his own “musical comics” as he calls them, and he’s been doing the entire “Lamb” album. He’s up to “The Lamia” at present. His comic rendition of “Supper’s Ready” caught my attention at first.
Arrested is good enough, let them die.
Sometimes the extremism around here is just baffling to me.
Wah.
I don’t recall heat, air conditioning, or hot food during most of my time in the Marine Corps. Come to think of it, I slept on the ground under the stars, or with a shelter half a lot.
Give them a sleeping bag.
what judge sentenced you to the corps?
What do they expect in a jail? Club Med? I could care less about these poor poor criminals. What about the people to whom they caused harm, injury or death? Do they get to complain, too?
Maybe this needs to be included in trumps prison reform.
Yes I was, Doubling up your sarcasm with like kind. :)
no they get a trial the the guilty party is sentenced to freeze to death in jail.
It's a federal facility.
slow night in the rain, missed it
Agree. These same freepers very concerned about a fetus killed have no compassion for adult humans. Suffering is suffering.
I’ve learned to not respond to many of the insane posts here, but can’t help it sometimes. The lesson learned is that you can’t reason someone out of something they weren’t reasoned into.
Also that change is hard, but self-destruction is easy.
Many are awaiting trial. Innocent until proven guilty.
