Fairfax said he got the sense that Northam believed there was a reasonable chance he was one of the people in the photo.
“I think part of the reason to apologize and to call me over and to talk through it was because that was the natural assumption," Fairfax said.

Northam can not be intelligent person, not if you pretend that you believe all his statements were true. It was him. It wasn’t him. He’s not sure. He doesn’t think it was him. I know whether it was me or not in every picture I see that was taken after about age ten, and I know none of them were in black face or in a Klan robe - those have always been for democrats, not for normal Americans.
It’s 2019 and the democrats have a Governor whose nickname is coonsmen.

If Northam resigns, then Fairfax is governor. What is he going to say? He may try to pretend to help Northam, and make the situation worse.
If Fairfax becomes governor, then the Democrats are in trouble. They put him on the ticket as a token, hoping to pick up votes, and now he might be displayed in all his glory.

I thought it’s a critical moment meant, get out, I’m taking over.
I hope Northam doesn’t resign. If he stays, he’ll be weakened throughout the rest of his term, making it harder for him to screw up Virginia more than he already has. Plus, his idiot Lt Gov won’t get elevated to Governor to “stand up to Trump.”
