A climate problem even California can't fix: tailpipe pollution

LOS ANGELES - For three decades, California has led the fight to control tailpipe pollution, with countless policies promoting cleaner gasoline, carpooling, public transportation and its signature strategy - the electric vehicle.

Californians now buy more than half of all EVs sold in the United States, and the state’s auto-pollution policies have provided a model being adopted around the world.

But they’re not working at home, by the state’s own measure. Tailpipe pollution here is going up, not down, despite billions of dollars spent by one of the most environmentally progressive governments on earth.

“The strategies that we’ve used up until now just haven’t been effective,” Mary Nichols, the head of the California Air Resources Board, told Reuters.

That failure has less to do with energy or environmental policies and more with decades-old urban planning decisions that made California – and especially Los Angeles – a haven for sprawling development of single-family homes and long commutes, according to state officials.

Los Angeles is mulling a proposal to charge drivers during rush hour and use that money to make public transit free by 2028.

Other options include waiving fees for pooled rides to and from airports and adding safety lanes for scooters and bikes.

Efforts could include lower-cost housing in urban centers to bring people closer to work, and the elimination of building codes requiring parking spots to encourage more drop-off carpooling, according to experts.

It would help if CA actually had a legislature with even one person capable of passing a third grade science test.

I’m surprised they have not passed the law they really want. Mandate a maximum of 200 sq ft of living space and ban cars completely (except of those given elite status, granted solely by the government, of course).

Not necessary if workers lived in dormatories in the basements of their workplaces.

This is an announcement from Genetic Control
It is my sad duty to inform you of a four foot restriction on
Humanoid height
I hear the directors of Genetic Control have been buying all the
Properties that have recently been sold, taking risks oh so bold
It’s said now that people will be shorter in height
They can fit twice as many in the same building site
They say it’s alright
Beginning with the tenants of the town of Harlow
In the interest of humanity, they’ve been told they must go
Told they must go-go-go-go

They’re gonna “solve” their problem by causing a mass exodus from the state...

If you’ve got the dough you and your gas guzzler can buy your way onto many of the HOV lanes. Californians love their SUVs and that’s not going to change soon.

I’m sure the five to ten million illegals in state had no impact on this.

Neener, neener......

Seattle and King County is ending its emissions testing next year because of the improvement in air quality.

It also was a great help to require upgraded wood stoves.

The most “environmentally friendly” cars are newer, and expensive, with hefty fees when it comes time to renew vehicle registration.

As more and more low skilled, low wage, folks are imported into California, the more older, higher polluting cars are added to the roads. Oh, and don’t forget that these folks always know someone who can get their cars, even those considered “gross polluters”, smogged.

When I moved to California in 1973, we had 21 million people. Now it’s almost double. It seems the extra 19 million have all come from Mexico. We’ll be happy to send some your way.

Ah yes. California solution is to punish more people into submission. The stupidity grows.

It's the middle class that are forced to move out to suburbs and have long commutes. The wealthy can afford the 1,200 SF, $1 Million homes in the city. The poor people sleep on the streets or in shelters or in government housing. So California proposes to take more income from the middle class so the rich and the poor don't have to pay to get around in their own neighborhood.

Until you figure out a way to stop traffic, you aren’t going to reduce tailpipe emissions.

My guess is they will start mandating staggered working hours for businesses in their jurisdiction... so spread out the rush hour and have fewer cars sitting idling waiting for traffic to move...

If they can figure out a way to do it.

It's mathematically impossible to control air pollution in this manner. The overwhelming majority of emissions come from the relatively few commercial vehicles. Personal vehicles are not in use most the time and produce little tailpipe emissions in the first place. They could ban all private cars and barely make a dent in emissions.

But then, one of the leaders of this bunch of fools is a NY Governor who doesn't know that hurricanes have repeatedly hit New York in the past.

This will sound like an off the wall strategy, but I would consider cutting some of the mountain rangers along the corridor, allowing air movement. I always heard that the reason California is so polluted is due to the mountains preventing air flow.

Take the dirt and rock and build jetties to prevent beach erosion.

FTA: and adding safety lanes for scooters and bikes

That means more people killed riding scooters & bikes.
They put the bike lanes right next to the car lanes instead of next to the curb. 5,000lb vehicles going much faster then any bike is an accident waiting to happen.

Why don’t they just make it illegal to work?
