Chicago Police Deny Claim That Jussie Smollett Identified Attackers as White, Heard Them Say 'MAGA'

Empire star Jussie Smollett is in the hospital after two people allegedly assaulted him on the streets of Chicago around 2:00 a.m. last night.

The police are investigating the attack as a hate crime, since the perpetrators reportedly made racist and homophobic slurs. Smollett is a gay black man.

Several media outlets referenced claims that appeared in TMZ's coverage of this matter, most notably that the perpetrators were white and yelled "this is MAGA country," as they attacked Smollett. But a spokesperson for the Chicago police denied having any information about the race and political views of the attackers.

"According to the victim, the offenders' faces were concealed," a police spokesperson told Reason. "We have no record indicating that [they shouted 'MAGA'], we only have record of them shouting racial and homophobic slurs at him."

Chicago police have also released a statement contradicting claims that Smollett identified his attackers' race and heard them shout "MAGA."

"We have no record of The MAGA Country comment," said the police in a statement. "We have racial and homophobic comments documented."

Until we know more, it would be wise to avoid making any sweeping generalizations about who to blame for this. The best course of action right now is to wish Smollett a speedy recovery and wait for better information.

Hmm... Just this afternoon it was reported that gay, black actor Jussie Smollet was recognized by a couple of white racists from his role in a show that no white person has ever watched during a 2:00 am jaunt to Subway (none of which are open in Chicago past midnight). These two white racists just happened to have a noose and a bottle of bleach which they used to attack Smollet while screaming that downtown Chicago is "MAGA country!"

Turns out, much to everyone's surprise, that some of these details may not quite be accurate.

They will not issue a retraction when caught as they did not name an individual as a suspect so can’t be successfully sued.

This story is falling apart faster than the Covington kids fiasco of last week..yeah, like Im supposed to believe in blizzard conditions, two white guys wearing ski masks, maga hats, rope, and bleach were just walking around with NOTHING to do at 2am and recognized some actor that I wouldn’t know from a hole in the wall and attack him for NO reason..I think what is most likely believable is that this actor made the entire story up(There are NO witnesses and he drove himself to the hospital) for publicity after all now everyone knows his name, did you all know his name yesterday
