Covington Catholic and the Absolute Failure of Adults
The American Conservative ^ | January 22, 2019 | James McElroy

As everyone knows by now, a group of high school boys from Covington Catholic attended the pro-life march in Washington and visited the Lincoln Memorial. There they were accosted by a group of racist Black Israelites — grown men who were yelling at 14-year-old kids, “you little dirty ass crackers, your day coming” and “I will stick my foot in your ass!” A Native American protester then marched towards the students while beating a drum.

Naturally, the national media did not report that this group of black supremacists had hurled racial epithets at children. Instead, the students were painted as racist villains. The media mob accused the kids of surrounding and mocking an elderly Native American veteran.

This whole event is beyond stupid. If the students hadn’t been wearing MAGA gear, this would not be a national news story. Yet the children’s church felt the need to condemn its own members. Their diocese sent out a bunch of “not our values” PR crap. Why didn’t they wait to get all the facts? The unedited two hour video shows a group of immature kids caught in a bizarre situation. And it raises the great question of our age: where the hell are the adults?

"The most egregious adult failure came from the Kentucky diocese that threw its own children under the bus. Responsible leaders would have waited for more information before issuing a statement. These kids were violently threatened by deranged lunatics only to be threatened with expulsion from their school. Church leaders are supposed to be shepherds, but they’ve been so beat up by the child abuse scandals that they no longer have any fight in them. And by failing to wait for the full story, the Church betrayed its youth once again, along with the entire pro-life movement by legitimizing propaganda against it. In a culture that views Christianity as synonymous with bigotry, the Catholic Church needs to be able to withstand a little cyberbullying."

Excellent article.

Catholic leadership at all levels is in serious trouble.

The Covington Diocese “reputation” as preferring the liberal, “seamless garment” nonsense, to the Gospel of Life is well intact.

They have barred Pro-Life groups from Church Property.

It is clear that they hate Trump and the Red MAGA hats, more than they hate abortion.

As long as Catholics are more terrified of not getting their Sacraments (prior Catholic, here) they will continue to give monies to the Catholic Church and tolerate anything, including the destruction of their children’s lives.

I’m hoping the affected Covington youths learn a deep lesson of how their adults care more about Sacraments than their well-being.

Catholics have ALWAYS been threatened by the loss of the Sacraments by the Catholic Church. And Catholics have ALWAYS made excuses as they continue to fund the Catholic Church.

Sad fact.

“Catholic leadership” that has hidden and protected and rationalized countless abusive priests for decades.... but throws some innocent teens under the MSM bus at the first hint of Leftist agitprop.

Catholic leadership at all levels has lost its way or has been hijacked and is causing serious trouble.

Worse yet, these are the same people that encouraged the kids to go on this march.

That’s the head-shaker in this: what about the abuse? Compared to that, why did they feel they had to comment on these kids?

You’d think they’d just keep their yaps shut.

I expect liberals and media to be who they are. What disappointed me most was that their school and diocese turned on these kids immediately. And where were the parents? Only now coming out of hiding?

What's the value of a "Catholic education"?

The young men were the only adults in this incident. The rest were either bullies or cowards.

” A Native American protester then marched towards the students while beating a drum.”

I didn’t know that. I thought that kid came up to the Native American.

I haven’t followed this episode closely because I consider it an uninteresting little mess.

To paraphrase Lev Bronstein: "You may not be interested in [race] war, but [race] war is interested in you".

‘It is also incredibly idiotic to start banging a drum at a bunch of kids.’

‘And Catholics have ALWAYS made excuses as they continue to fund the Catholic Church.’

interesting...until rather recently, I was a rad-trad Catholic, steeped in the TLM with all the incense and chants and Latin responses...as my postings in the last two years show, I have soured on religion, and have adopted the Enlightenment values made evident in the US Constitution as my intellectual formulation...point being, I would have cooked up every excuse in the book to protect the Church, based on my affinity to a specific ritual and its rubrics...

it is difficult to criticize that which you hold dear, but it is a necessary step; and the first question to ask is ‘am I, or anybody else, improved by holding onto my affections...?’

I’m not interested in race war and so far it hasn’t been interested in me because don’t say offensive things about race, which in turn is because I think down deep all races are the same. The culture people grow up in is what differentiates them.

The process you went through is what my beloved would call the ‘Intelligent/Logical’ approach. He was a very strong Catholic until he started reading history. He found so many contradictory things within the Catholic Church that he said he couldn’t close his eyes to what he was reading/processing and still remain intellectually honest.
His process lead him to become a Christian. My eldest son was on the same level/plane intellectually as he is and my husband and he would have discussions. My eldest son became a Christian. He drove from Maryland to Texas so my pastor could baptize him. My father, who is an extreme Catholic said my son, “would grow up some day and return to the Catholic Church.” My eldest is 41!

It will be interesting to see where your walk leads you.
