CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin fretted Friday that many Americans would dismiss the news media as a "bunch of leftist liars" in the wake of the BuzzFeed News story called "not accurate" by special counsel Robert Mueller's office.
BuzzFeed set off a Washington firestorm on Thursday with its report that President Donald Trump had directed longtime lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. However, on Friday night, a spokesman for Mueller's office said the report was "not accurate."
"BuzzFeed's description of specific statements to the Special Counsel's Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen's Congressional testimony are not accurate," the spokesman said in a statement.
The story had dominated political discussions throughout the day on Friday, with multiple Democrats saying the report, if true, could merit impeachment proceedings against Trump. The rare comment by Mueller's office calling the report inaccurate caused the left-leaning Toobin to worry it would further diminish the media's reputation with the public.
"The larger message that a lot of people are going to take from this story is that the news media are a bunch of leftist liars who are dying to get the president, and they're willing to lie to do it," Toobin said. "And I don't think that's true."
"I just think this is a bad day for us … It reinforces every bad stereotype about the news media," he added.
"Reliable Sources" host Brian Stelter agreed with his latter statement but said as a media reporter, he was "desperate" for his audience to judge individuals and brands on a case-by-case basis.

Gee, Toobin. The majority of Americans already realize that most of the media are leftist liars.
We will know that the media are serious about their reputations when they start cleaning up their act by reporting news, unbiased and unfiltered. Until then, we'll continue to take everything they publish with a huge grain of salt.
In the wake of the BuzzFeed story? Heck, I have seen them as liars for decades at this point.

Imagine the shoe on the other foot. Imagine about 5 years ago, if someone in the Honolulu Records office reported that they were told to lie about Obama’s Hawaiian birth. How would the news media respond?
1. Ignore the story completely. OR
2. Decry how the office of president was not being respected. OR
3. Tell us this is a false story put out by a “birther”.
In other words, any story negative about a Republican President (especially Trump) is immediately blasted across headlines and the airwaves. And the retraction is either not at all or pg b10 in a little box in the corner.
While any story negative toward a Democrat President (especially Obama) is ignored or the people making the charge are called names and the charge itself is ignored.
In general, this has happened all the way back to Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush, both Clintons and Bush.
It’s been a long time since I’ve watched anything on CNN, and for obvious reasons.
There is already many comments on this, so perhaps no one will read this. The media, I am certain, knew the buzzfeed story was a lie. Buzzfeed, in my opinion, ran the story to create a News Frenzy to distract from the congressional testimony of Bruce Ohr. They didn’t have anything in the cycle to spotlight, so they just ran with a fake story, then blamed buzzfeed.
They have to keep the Trump hating base uninformed, because any descent knowledgeable person who understands spygate, and now its direct connection to Dirty Mueller (yes Bruce Ohr stated that Mueller KNEW what was going on with the dossier, and hired Many people involved in its fraud to the FISA court), can only now accept that our federal government is corrupt, illegal, and no longer serving the will of the people. That reality is devastating for leftists, as well as its implication for Obama, Clinton’s, and just about every Democratic Party leader. You cannot care about your Constitution, rule of law, and your fellow Americans and be in this group after understanding spygate. Yes, you can be for communism and hate America and still be democrat.
The only option that the ‘democratic communists/socialists’ have is to misinform the masses to prevent a fractured ‘democratic’ party from evaporating numbers and support. George Soros, our enemies, and the media understand this, and that’s why the act like they do. It’s mostly not fake news actually, it’s diversion from the important news, as well as non reporting of relevant news.

Trump doesn't email or text, he twitters. So claiming they have "seen" or "been read in" on documents is a lie, there are no documents. Mueller came out swinging because the AG was being urged to begin a investigation on who committed the felony on Mueller's team, by leaking.
That's the message all right, and yes, it IS true.

They have already started their counter defense with the “ tell us which parts”. That way they will hype any little potential “ weasel worded” item they can. Those who hate The Donald will then harp on / magnify this with a renewed emphasis on he has to go
