Federal workers and contractors not getting paid have had to resort to seeking handouts as the record-breaking shutdown continues for a fourth week.
In Washington, DC, the line for free meals stretched down Pennsylvania Avenue between the White House and the Capitol because workers say any little bit helps when no money is coming in.
Accepting that Im here is demoralizing, said a teary Blen Woldearegay, a Department of Interior contractor who is worried about possible foreclosure on her new home.
Its hard. Its hurtful. Im not the type of person that likes to do that [ask for help] just by nature. So admitting that Im looking for help is not exactly my strong suit.
Famed chef José Andrés is offering free meals daily to thousands of furloughed workers in DC through his emergency food bank, World Central Kitchen, which typically operates in foreign countries devastated by earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanoes.
This is different in that its not a natural disaster, but its a man-made disaster and unfortunately people are affected just the same, said WCK executive director Nate Mook.
The pop-up kitchen, located near the Trump International Hotel, is prepared to serve workers suffering as President Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi duke it out with no end in sight.
WCK handed out quinoa bowls, toasted sandwiches and soup.

“a Department of Interior contractor”
That is not a federal worker.
Fake news.
RIF RIF RIF !!! NOW!!
The media doesn’t realize this, but these sob stories just put more pressure on the Dims to surrender.
As for the Trump constituency, we are heartless bastards that want all of these people fired, lose their house and have their kids call them derisive names.
We have years of resolve left.
Federal workers go one week without a paycheck, and they are bankrupt and homeless?
Fire them for incompetence!
I was 20 years old when I got my first full time job in 1975.
It paid $3.00 per hour.
Since then, I have never lived paycheck to paycheck.
Just lucky, I guess.
(I don’t do SARC tags)
I am evil no doubt..
I am counting the minutes till they can be Rif’d ;)
What a crock of $$$t.....a average fed worker making anywhere from 60k up, needs a handout after only one month without pay......Many of us live on half that, and can make it for months.
Consider it “Funemployment” Nancy
I’m a federal worker and I got furloughed. I had to sell two of my children into slavery and one I had to sell to the butcher for meat. My dog is now gone (into last week’s stew) and soon we will be eating the wallboard off our walls.
Damn Donald Trump.

Every time Hussien went on TV, the next round of layoffs happened the following day
Violin music please....
I have no sympathy at all for someone with a GUARANTEED job who can’t put at least several paychecks into a savings account.
My kid works for state government and she has 6 months total living expenses in the back. A year if she were able to get unemployment or even a part time job. She doesn’t consider a state job any guarantee.
Why not just find another job like everyone else would have to do?
This is a teachable moment for people who have been living paycheck to paycheck. Adjust your priorities and your spending and start saving.
Not buying the foreclosure thing. I have two mortgage lenders, and both have let it be known that they will work with people who have been affected by the shutdown.
LOL, Im willing to bet half of those starving fed workers are not only overweight but are also technically obese.
I retired 18 months ago, haven’t claimed SS yet, and can pay all my bills.
What the hell is the matter with these people?
Chef Jose Adreas and quinoulla bowls..
Its like a dream come true!
And I dont have to pack a lunch or go to work?!!
